Then secretly give them +rep .
I look _good_ in my top hat, waistcoat and frock coat .

But seriously - there's a few points where you 'instantly fail' an interview, and most of the rest is negotiable. Very few places will burn you for overdressing. A few more will burn you for underdressing. Most will fall somewhere in the middle - they won't be overly impressed, but they won't be crossing your name off the list instantly.

But there's also nothing wrong with doing some good prep - phone up a contact in the company (HR for example) to ask what would be appropriate. It does two things - answers your question, without being flustered. And also may well get back to your interviewer in a positive sense. Believe it or not, 'cares enough to make a good impression' goes quite a long way.

However, importantly - don't bother trying to game the interview. There really is no point. The best possible outcome is you'll succeed in getting a job which you can't do, and you feel really out of your depth. More likely, you'll come across as an idiot, and even if you _could_ have done the job you were going for, you've proven yourself to be dishonest.

I don't. I do an exceptionally good Jet Li though.

And again, it comes down to choosing clothing that makes the right statement, but that you're comfortable wearing.
    Contract stuff to Seraphina Amaranth.

    Question.

Is it bad form to respond to a job posting using the work email of the company you're currently employed with?

Assume I give zero shits about who reads my company mail because I'm four weeks behind on my pay. Does it reflect badly on me, in the eyes of the intended recipient?

(Also who the fuck gave you my private email address!?)

Have been trying to fill a guard position. The brief given to the recruiters specified that they had to be suitable for working in a family environment. Pacific Islander shows up. This guy is massive, and I mean hugely built not fat, and is covered in tribal tatoos including half his face. Go through the motions but no way was that guy going to get the job.

The recruiters who sent him rang latter to see how it went. I told them thanks but no thanks. "But Taou is great with children!" gushes the idiot hearing their commission vamish. "You mean like in cooking them in a stone lined pit? I replied.

    God give me strength.

the red dots are actually a camoflauge thing. If a sniper is about to shoot them, he will see the red dot and assume another sniper is about to kill them, so he wont waste the bullet.

Actually we hire a lot of Pacific Islanders and Sikhs as they make very good security guards. The problem is the client specified the kind of guard they wanted (it was for a womens' refuge), we passed that on to the recruiters, who simply ignored it. If it was a cash in transit job that guy would have been hired on the spot.

But then I have seen people turn up for jobs requiring good English skills who were unitelligble, and for a programming role who didn't know what Unix was, so nothing surprises me these days.

Unless you're hiring an actor or model you aren't supposed to base employment on whether the person is pretty enough. Of course lots of places do stipulate that they're hiring models even if they're doing non-typical model things. But that's for an employment tribunal.

Also actually saying you didn't hire someone because you didn't like their style is the stupid part. If you kept your mouth shut and lied that they weren't qualified noone would be any the wiser.

Here in Oz you can specify levels of education, attire, hygene, etc for employees. And whether people like it or not the first thing you will be judged on is how you look. The person interviewing you doesn't know you from a bar of soap, so how you present yourself will be taken into account. In this case there was no way on the face of the planet that the customer would accept that guard.

It goes all ways. I suspect the person with the tats and piercings would have an advantage over a stiff in a suit when applying for a body artist position for example. A huge Pacific Islander would have it over me applying to be a bouncer. And so on.

As for lying I told the guy the truth - he was not suitable for the job. My sarcasm and abuse was saved for the recruiters who can't read a brief.

I would avoid doing that for several reasons, the main one being that if you suddenly don't work at your current employer then whoever you were communicating with no longer has a way of contacting you.

It's a mail server for a virtual company. I can access it from my house.

Anyway, boss is not on GIM this afternoon. How curious, I wonder if he's ducking me because his "solution" didn't materialize.

I wouldn't do it (send resume without personal email) just simply because it doesn't look professional. YOU are applying for a job. Not the you who works for your company.

What is the 'correct' way to use linkedin? I do have an account but currently it is effectively just my resume with some HR managers for companies I have worked for in the past as contacts.

If it's obviously your work email, yes. It's unprofessional and it'll reflect badly on you.

That's about right. Fill in you resume. Add colleagues as contacts. Tout for recommendations. Fill in your skills list. Assume it's your first point of 'go to' when an employer looks you up on google. Also: recruiters use it a lot try and fill roles.
