Hero kills in LoL are great to pick up if possible, but since you lose no gold the only real downside to dying is that you're letting your enemy get ahead of you in farm. LoL heroes snowball pretty hard, so getting behind in farm is very bad.

LoL is fun and has a healthy FHC community, I'd play it and enjoy it. Try Dota2 for a few games (~10 maybe) when you get the opportunity (I don't have any spare keys, or I'd hook you up) and see what you think. The general opinion of FHC seems to be that they like both, although a lot of the really veteran LoL players here seem to be switching to playing more dota2.

In either case, play with friends whenever possible, it REALLY improves the experience. Pubs are okay but a team of friends with voice comms makes games awesome.

If fhc didn't have such an active community I'd have packed in lol for dota ages ago

I like both of them tbh

ive switched to playing mostly DOTA2 from LoL, but as much because of the lol playerbase as the game.

i actually think the opposite of poly, dying in lol is usually far more damaging than dying in dota, just because of how much harder the game snowballs. in an evenly skilled lane, the first one to die will usually lose the lane, especially in top or bottom. mid seems a little more flexible in that regard. its also alot easier to come back from being behind in dota.

Id play dota2 if i could, LoL FHC ingame channel has been a bit vacant lately

Which goes to show, almost any game can be fun if you play with a couple of regulars on ts.

Well you can, you can run teleport, but very few champs actually want to run teleport. The thing is in LoL you don't lose gold from deaths, so the run back to lane is kind of the 'balancer' there. As Edna said dying in LoL is much worse than dying in Dota - LoL games snowball earlier and snowball harder, it's very hard to come back from a losing position in LoL.

Just from my own point of view:

HoN: Was a carbon copy of Dota for a long time then S2 started introducing their own mechanics and heroes. Still not a great game and ruined by their insistence on going f2p mid-stream, giving all legacy players massive advantages over anyone new. Community is legendarily bad but this is due to the fact that it's a teamgame and it's also quite a small community.

LoL: I've seen it called lots of nasty things. Basically it takes the core idea of Dota which is 5v5 on a map with three lanes, and changes quite a lot. Changes from Dota include: No denies, no loss of gold on death, constantly available teleport to the fountain, change from agi/int/str to damage and ability ratios, each champ takes two 'summoner spells' into games, stuff like a blink, teleport to structure, debuffs and etc. There are tons of other changes too. Riot HATES champs that can be considered 'hard carries' and balances around avoiding that, as well as other things. This makes the game simulataneously more fun (because you know that it's not a case of farm for 45mins then whoever has better carries wins) and less fun (you can play a perfect game and lose, it's more or less impossible to win 1v5 if your team doesn't want you to). LoL has become kind of stale for me recently, the meta game is badly in need of a shift and the community is almost as bad as HoN's, especially at the lower matchmaking levels.

Dota2: At this point is more or less a carbon copy of Dota without all the heroes yet, Valve have said they're going to make a version that has their own changes as well as a 'classic' version which is the version everyone's playing in Beta. I'm still undecided about it - the general lineup of teams is a lot better, there are a lot more viable strats and it's a lot easier to come back from a losing position. Dota has much more 'meaningful' spells on heroes, being completely stunlocked through the duration of a fight isn't that uncommon and stuff like global silence exists. Community, yet again, hasn't impressed me but it's Valve and they're generally quite good at community management once things get going so I'd wait to see what they do post-beta. The game needs to zoom out further - this is a personal complaint but I feel like I can't see enough in Dota2. The Minimap is also poor in my opinion, doesn't give you enough information.

Totally agree with this, is there a setting I can change to see more/make the UI smaller?

unless you do some form of console-fu that i don't know about then there isn't one

think it's one of those things kept in because of wc3 limitations/player elitism

I've played LoL and HoN about equally, and I can say objectively that HoN has the absolute worst community I've ever seen anywhere, with LoL being a close runner up. Both could easily beat whoever is in 3rd place with both hands tied behind their back (they probably don't need their feet either with how well their skill at verbal abuse is developed tbh).

I've played about 500 games on LoL's NA server and I can only remember a handful of times where I was overly disappointed in the community. That could be because I've played Eve for so long and logged copious amounts of XBox Live time.

Yeah, NA doesn't seem anywhere near as bad as the EU guys make their server sound. Sure you'll ge,t the odd dickhead, usually Korean in my timezone but for the most part they aren't that bad.

Did the dot a 2 beta quiz thing on steam about a week back and I've gotten in, never played dota so I just looked up some champ names and answered the rest as if it was lol. Haven't played it yet, do I get invites to hand out straight away? If so fhc is welcome to most of them.

They are same. Just experiences vary. I saw enough NA streamed games and they are exactly the same as in EU.
