Lots of people will probably buy this game regardless if it's good or not, or sub for on month whatever. Because it is notch and notch can do no wrong bullshit etc.

Being bitter about an internet spaceship game just after it has gone through an early concept stage, damn. That is a record isn't it?

Its the "too hip for minecraft" syndrome. So this gets shit on by association.

Notch is diving into /r/askscience so hope for a bit of hard scifi is not lost.

Also mentioned is a feature where space areas of high radiation could flip random bits of your computer memory. Someone modified an emulator and recorded the result.

Plans for a vector based classic scifi style holo-projector were revealed as well.

god this sounds all kinds of awesome
sadly i won't have anywhere near enough time to play it, since i'd have to remember asm and actually start coding in it...
but this game smells beautifully of retro, of old school, neckbeard, basement dwelling, BBS hackers...

I have a feeling that in practice this will be intensely boring.

There will be 2 or 3 reputable software "packages" for your onboard computer which everyone will use. All others will be too virusey etc. Then the complete lack of actual gameplay will kill the game.

"Lets write machine code" as a game idea is literally retarded

And if you think that "Lets write machine code" is the majority of the gameplay than you are literally retarded.

How so? Have you looked at his site? We only have a vague idea what actual gameplay will be like, yet we have detailed specs right down to the instruction set of what the computer will be like. "So people can get a head start!"

Basically its a game that will require either machine coding, or google + copypasta to even move your ship. Yes, this sounds like all kinds of fun. After a long day coding at the office, I just want to wind down and delve into some machine code from the 80s so I can "play".

Actually I think he is right on the money with this one. Its the perfect game for unemployed nerds, which seems to be the audience he has captured with virtual legos.. I mean minecraft.

So a stupified game is what you are after, or what are you trying to say here? If someone likes machine code, they are unemployed nerds? Legos are stupid?

Maybe he is just making, what he himself thinks would be fun. The man has earned money enough to last him 10 lifetimes, so why should he give a fuck about what anyone else thinks about his ideas or how commercially viable they are?

DCPU16 specs updated. Includes basic interrupt and hardware support, a fast buffer copy operation, signed and carry extended maths, double the opcodes (at the expense of getting literals in the second value field), and several other community recommended changes.

No, no actual gameplay updates yet.

Instruction sets are pretty easy compared to gameplay. The basic structure of them also tends to be pretty set in stone once one is created. It'll also allow people to write nav computers and such to distribute quickly once a playable version of this is released

Analogous to watching a video of a minecraft computer and then saying how stupid minecraft is because you need to spend weeks placing redstone in repetitive patterns in order to do anything. Minecraft computers are created by a small subset of the community, but they tend get the most attention because of the nerd factor.

I'm pretty sure I said this before a few pages back, but I doubt that ship movement will only be possible via writing code. It would be stupid if it worked that way. I suspect that the ship would be workable via manual controls, and everyone will probably fly manually too. They'll just end up running the numbers through a nav computer before attempting to do orbit changes or things like that.

Also note that I'm saying this while being fully aware of my inability to calculate an orbit on my own in games like KSP or orbiter (because fuck physics). However, there are tons of orbit calculators already out there for games like KSP, and navigational calculators will probably be some of the first things that people will release code for.

Maybe you should go play submarines in space or something, I hear there's even an entire forum section devoted to it.

If disliking assembly makes me a bad, then I am guilty as charged.

Actually a lot of people in this thread played on the SHC/FHC Minecraft servers, so most Notch-focused bitterness probably has some reasons behind it.

People also seem to forget that it is an indytitle. It is mainly developed by one guy, so expectations shouldn't surpass that fact.

Tastes differ, too much bitter, etc, etc.

Related: there's a mod for minecraft that allows you to program machine code to make a robot do stuff for you: computercraft or something. If people enjoy playing that then there is also a market for Spaceship Programming: The Videogame. Although honestly not sure if want, will see later.
