It's an intriguing idea for sure, though it seems like it would have a lot less mass appeal than Minecraft, where you start off by hitting stuff with a pick and stacking blocks on top of each other. All the other redstone computer stuff is extraneous fun for nerds.

I do like the concept though; like in games like Deus Ex etc the hacking part is so videogamey, it seems quite interesting to go completely balls deep into it instead and make you write code yourself if you want to win.

ITT people think that graphics make gameplay. Even though they played EVE...

I really like the looks of that! Nostalgic, retro, artsy... nice.

EvE actually has great graphic. It is just that we turn it all off and zoom out 10 minutes after installing. Also, sound. =)

The game has been in development for all of 3 weeks. Stop complaining about a lack of visual content in a game that's barely out of the proof-of-concept stage.

Notch posted that the game will support virtual IO for real devices like joysticks and possibly MIDI or serial so people can make control panels/interfaces.

The downside is that this makes it easier to augment the DCPU with your PC, but Notch says this was an inevitability anyway. The DCPU would have to process the the information anyway somewhat so there is still a large bottleneck on performance.

And notch apparently threw the hard scifi setting out the window, I'm suddenly not as interested.

I think this game has a lot of potential and I am cool with Notch taking it the realistic or not so realistic way, either of them would make a great game (for me at least) if executed correctly. As this is barely past the concept stage I'll hold off any conclusions.

I dunno, I think if you read some of notch's comments on the issue you'd probably agree. Unfun HardCore Scifi is probably unfun. However fun SciFi that 'good enough' is probably an excellent compromise!

It still doesn't sound like he's throwing science to the wind screaming "the force" and "dylithium crystals". We don't know what his original idea of "hard scifi" was so we don't have any idea what "not hard scifi" means either. There are still lots of ways he can make an interesting "functional" scifi setting.

And with that I'll pimp my favorite web resource on the topic: http://www.projectrho.com/rocket/

Yeah, I love that site. I was thinking that anyone interested in "hard sci-fi" would know about it, but I started poking around the 0x10c forums this morning and all the on there makes me think not.

I even got riled up enough to make a post about FTL drives: http://0x10cforum.com/forum/m/493288...9752#p15799752

    edit:

I think it would be fun, just not "fun" in the way most people think of space games (tie fighter, x-3, freelancer, etc.). Most of the gameplay would have to come from things like thinking ahead (lightspeed lag, acceleration limited by crew limitations and fuel requirements, etc.), fire control (making your missile drone hit hit a target with a spacenuke from 8 light-minutes away), engineering, damage control, etc.

    Some more information:

There will be no local multiplayer, only SP and p2p MMO.

Personal combat will be just as important (if not more) as ship combat.
