    I figured you'd just need a community and notepad++

    There are a few emulators out there that allow you to step through machine code, thats about it atm. Keep in mind this is only day 3.

    That said even though I do enjoy programming, the game should be so much more than just a playground for programming primitive 16bit processors, if so I'd much rather just play around with an FPGA or Gumstick, which actually have RL application.

    there is one more testing the lighting system but twitter if foobar atm so I can't retrieve the link.
    Ahh, people are using eclipse for assembly, we're all doomed.
    I'm assuming the game its self will be much more than just dicking around with programming..
    The game will be spent faffing about with whatever you want to do until you die horribly to someone who has better programs than you.

    Another screenshot using the graphics engine

    The style will be solid filled (so no textures), with emphasis on dynamic lighting. I'm liking the contrast you get with multiple colored light sources (see previous page's image). Haven't noticed any specularity variation with the surface materials yet.

    Because if the base is asm, eventually someone could write an interpreter so that the asm-challanged can type
    Code:
    $add = $x + 9;
    instead of
    Code:
    add [0x1000], 9

    If any of you don't know assembly yet and actually care a farts ass to try and learn, begin with http://www.securitytube.net/video/208 and follow the series. It's basic, it's rudimentary and it's spoken with sometimes broken english but it will teach you the ropes (although in later videos the level of knowledge presumed may spike a bit and he expects you to know the previous vids content by heart).

    ASM really isn't that hard, and learning the ropes with it will help if you actually plan on programming anything (if this game is ever built)

    It's something new that's for sure but a lot of people will be too dumb to get even started(myself definitely included).

    The DCPU16 has been emulated on itself, adding preemptive multitasking and memory protection.

    Players who don't want to write their own code will be able to use other people's programs to use in the game.

    hehe cool

    but noob question: why Java again? I thought that this is not really an optimal language for games

    Why? I have no idea, but I've never seen Notch code in anything but Java.

    Well with java you can be extremely productive (also it's cross platform), and considering he is just one guy I couldn't imagine him producing what he does as fast as he does it with regular C++ or something similar. The flipside is that his games are massive ressource hogs.

    He could perhaps do the same near as fast in QT, but I guess he is proficient in Java, so that's a moot point.

    QT is a framework. All in all, it does not really matter what programming language you make your game in. Of course, some are more efficient than others, but hardware resource is cheap compared to the cost/time developing in a low-level language.
