A fourth very cool woman; some straight men don’t meet this many in their entire lives. With the work I’ve done in a pharmacy, I take immediately to Doctor XX, and the way, fresh from med school, she rattles off abbreviations and testing protocols and drug classes: plain and nuclear and nonnuclear reverse transcriptase inhibitors, CD4 counts, viral load. She at first tells us that, with a line of prescriptions at the ready, that Chad is on death’s door, his white blood cell count is so drastically low; she leaves the room for a moment. Chad won’t look at me.

She returns. Profuse apology. Upon further study of the chart, that was a percentile, not an absolute value. He’s actually at quite a manageable level.

Atripla, she decides. Emtricitabine/tenofovir/efavirenz. One pill, once a day, every day, no matter what. Only 2,000 dollars for a one-month supply.

“Well, my husband has kind of a weird job,” she said. “He’d rather not live around other people.”

I sat up in the chair. “What does he do?”

“He’s a nuclear diver.”

“A what?”

“A diver who works in radiated water at nuclear power plants.”

I turned around to look at her. “Near the reactors?”

“The reactors, fuel pools, pretty much anywhere he’s needed.”

I have a book of HP Lovecraft that I randomly crack open every now and then. Re-animator, stuff like that.

The story is fairly solid, I love the world in which it is set in though. Most of the characters are quite good. It might not be ground breaking if published today, but seeing as how it's from the sixties it definitely does it right. Still I am completely apathetic towards this Jessica character, something about her character doesn't appeal to me at all.

Been reading Pattern Recognition by William Gibson off and on for a while now between school readings. Having read a lot of Neal Stephenson I can see a Gibson's influence/style in those books now.

Need to get back to Song of Fire and Ice soon, finished the first one ages ago, have the next three sitting around somewhere...
