Wasteland 2, Brian Fargo on kickstarter (3 mio dollars and counting)

So following the massive succes of the Tim Shafer and crew, Brian Fargo has put up a kickstarter on Wasteland 2.

Wasteland the predecessor of the fallout series, in a way. Fantastic game for it's time.

So if you like the idea of a turnbased, singleplayer, tactical sandbox RPG this will (hopefully) be it. I have put in $80 because I want this even more than a new Tim Shafer / Ron Gilbert game.

    The pitch is up at.

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2

Also up currently over $700k has been pledged, which is awesome.

UPDATE: now up to $1.2mio, at 1.5 they will go for cross platform support, fuck yeah.

UPDATE2 : Now up to $1.8mio, has accellerated greatly with over $100k yesterday, might be because of this:
UPDATE3: Less than 100 minutes to go, and they are sitting at $3 million. Pretty amazing.

Bought my copy yesterday, I was kinda tempted by early beta access (75$) then I saw "add 15$ for shipping outside US" so just bought the cheap digital copy.

i dunno. one one hand i wanna see this happen as the next guy. on the other inXile don't have decent enough game design track record, which makes me a bit skeptical. yea brian fargo was involved in making some great games, but that was ages ago.

inXile, as the name suggests, have been in the outskirts of the industry living of the publisher crumbs for years. It's not really surprising that they haven't been able to turn out great games, through Choplifter 2012 is pretty great.

Brian Fargo, while not as charismatic as Tim Schafer deserves a shot at this imo, I am pretty confident that he will deliver. It's definitely worth a few of my moneys to se him try, as I am sick of everything being turned into FPS slugfests or simplified 3D realtime versions of previous efforts.

btw slightly related to wasteland, here's Tim Cain, one of the main designers behind Fallout, giving a post-mortem of it at GDC 2012:
(spiritual successor to wasteland and originally was gonna be wasteland 2, but interplay never got the license etc., oh yea and Fargo wanted to cancel it)

The outpouring of support and faith is nothing like I have ever had before (except maybe from my Mom), and for the first time in years it feels good to be in the games business. I have always loved both making and playing games, but the business side of it has been painful at times. In fact, there were a couple times the frustration with publishers was so high I considered stopping. It just seemed like the era of purity was over. Even when Interplay was a large company there was such a positive vibe with everyone pulling in the same direction with a real passion for their job. I frequently run into the folks I worked with in those days, and this same memory of those times remains with them.

One friend of mine who worked with me there said recently he felt that in the beginning of the industry all the nerds were in charge, but then as the industry grew it changed, and now the guys that picked on the nerds got back on top. I think there was some great truth to that. We all hope this movement is bigger than just Tim Schafer or Brian Fargo as we want to get power back into the developers hands again. And the unbelievable Indie scene shows that there is momentum in that direction. The development community continues to pull itself together to ensure their success. They share tools, they share statistics, they share ideas, and the biggest donators in Kickstarter are always developers. All of this reminds me of the freshness the industry had in the late 80′s through mid 90′s in which creativity was being directed only by the gamers. The gamers will always rule at the end of the day.

You will probably hear me thanking you all a hundred more times, but again, thanks for giving us this opportunity to do what we do best. Make games!

But he didn't!, it's not quite as simple as that, as Tim Cains presentation shows, I recon anyone but Fargo would have cancelled Fallout, 3,5years development time with a 7 day, 12 hour work schedule(in the end).

Welcome back Black Isle, you've been missed. Tim Cain also works with Obsidian nowadays afaik.

Joined up too. With all the anti-bioware raging these days, I guess there's a decent niche for these people to exploit.

Yeah, got myself the boxed version, even with having to put 15$ for shipping, at least there isn't a silly 1$=1€ conversion rate...

Probably the best analogy I've seen concerning the recent Kickstarter-mania:

    http://www.kiasa.org/2012/04/02/thou...r-the-day-116/

I don’t know about the rest of you, but for me Kickstarter is beginning to feel like a number of one night stands. Drunk with beneficent gamer’s glee, I’ve sowed my arbitrary funding oats across a number of projects now, but at mostly $10-$15 a shot I’m starting to lose track of what went where and with whom.

More to the point: in nine or so months I’ll start getting these strangers turning up, informing me that at some point in the past we were intimately involved, that I ‘gave them a donation’, before handing over a little bundle and telling me that ‘here, this is yours’.

I think the idea is pretty much Analogy Complete – it even has that layer of built-in guilt, considering that they did all the hard work over the subsequent months, and I just happened to be there at the start, throwing my sponsorship seed around with wild abandon.

Hmmm, perhaps I should instead start selecting the ‘No reward, I just want to donate’ option, the Kickstarter equivalent of donating to a sperm bank.
