Only way this can work is if they don't touch anything except graphics and maybe interface a tiny bit. And ofc graphics have to stay 2D, just redrawn in HD resolutions.

Edit. Though otoh a AD&D game in 2012 will seam a little bit off; but if they change mechanics to what should they change it to? DnD 3.5? DnD4?

Please no DnD 3ed or later bullshit, the beauty of having ADD rules is that they are simple and easy to understand, the fighting has felt so much worse in the few dnd 3ed based RPG's out there.

And awesome that they are at least considering doing PS: Torment

Not having played PS:T is a capital offense.

Ducking behind cover and romancing that nice kobold lady! And in the end it's revealed that Bhaal just wanted to kill all organics so they wouldn't create golems to kill organics!

Seconding this, currently playing in glorious 1080p

You probably want to combine that with the patches listed here: http://thunderpeel2001.blogspot.com/...ly-modded.html
In addition to that I also got http://www.shsforums.net/topic/48732...wnsstuttering/ for fixed spell effects etc.

    Wasnt BG2 AD&D 3.5? Not sure, im not a D&D buff.

From the little ive read theyve so far said: HD remake, 2D pseudoisometric stays, theyll do BG1+TotSC as one and BG2+ToB as another one, additional content i.e. theyll translate the existing game (maybe reshuffling some puzzles for those who already know them by heart), but make it modular (a la NWN?) so they can add stuff when/where they feel like, like the Watcher's Keep or whatsitcalled you could do either before or after finishing BG2 main.
Though that might pose balancing problems, but hey maybe theyll implement scaling enemy difficulties so it stays challenging even for the near-godhood cheese chars.

BG2 had scaling enemies, this is mostly evident if you use a multiplayer trick to start the game with a character that has just finished the game

Ah had a feeling it did, leaving the shadow dragon for later f.e. didnt really allow you to face roll him. Still, wasnt sure. Come to think of it, stuff like mace of disruption or the cloak that reflected beholder beams were way more broken than high level abilities :>

After my 3rd palythrough or something, I ended up fiddling with hexeditors to increase the max XP cap in the game, then loaded in my sorc which has done 2 playthroughs already to find out that the 'over the cap' XP was getting saved and was added automatically once I loaded the game with the increased cap. Fighting Irenicus at lvl 24 was a proper biotch.

Yeah the scaling is pretty basic but still manages to keep stuff interesting. Also like the fact that things don't scale downwards, there are just some places where you will get WTFPWNED unless you have the needed abilities and levels.

This brings us to one of the strongpoints of BG, there is real variation between the enemies and you need different tactics against many of them.

Let's not get too far into the "pink glasses" area, unless you solo it its pretty straightforward. Normal enemies you just kill (optinally with buffing up before), mages you spam with defense stripping spells and then just kill. There are a few tough nuts, like the demigorgon or demi-lichs, but overall it wasn't really that complex.

Of course, if you compare it vs todays "RPGs" its something else.

Oh, and confiming that BG2 is today still very good, played through BG1 + 2 + TOB last autumn in 1920 * 1200 with the widescreen mod and stuff. Graphics still look very nice.
