I'm still semi/very noob, so could you elaborate on this one? I almost always do well in lane, but my team quite often sucks at team fights...want to make sure this isn't me

Don't worry, it isn't.

A trollpick only really applies once teams are setting up with the standard bruiser top + jungler + ap mid + ad and support botlane setup, where someone chooses to ignore that and play something useless within the meta because they don't like playing support/are rage filled morons.

I tend to post the following in chat before anyone can select champs:
Mid >> support > top >> jungle > ADc.
It gets the point that I'm best at mid across, and am generally not nearly as practiced at jungle/ad. If I must play one of those roles I will do so, but the chances that I do well will decrease. Interestingly I find that allied junglers tend to focus more on ganking bot in games where I am playing AD and posted a preference order than games where I am playing AD and did not do so. The sample size is too small for statsitical significance, however.
I wish matchmaking let you save a preference order, then took that into account when forming teams. Sadly that would reinforce the current meta and thus be intolerable to many people, so Riot is unlikely to implement such a system.

Expressing a preference is fine, I tend to do it to, but if somebody takes my preference before it's my turn, then it's tough titties for me. I do quite like your suggestion, it's pretty elegant.

It's a terrible idea for a few reasons.

One, it enshrines the current meta. I really don't want that to happen and neither does anyone else, eventually the meta will change again.

Second, I guarantee it will make matching take longer at the most common levels because you will have 90% of the matchmaking pool selecting AP or top, and around 20% selecting support.

Sorry, I meant the suggestion of saying "Mid >> support > top >> jungle > ADc" rather than being able to express a preference before matchmaking. I agree with what you have to say about that, Zekk.

Oh yeah, nothing wrong with stating a preference, as long as you understand it's only a preference and it doesn't entitle you to dick. But if you have roles that are significantly weaker than your strongest role, you should probably practice them some.

I mostly play with 4 other friends, and rarely solo queue in any way. I could practice my weaker roles, but as a group we do better by concentrating on our primary roles.
If I mostly played solo queue, sure, I'd work a lot more on my ADC/jungling. I'd buy more champs for other roles (7 of each role minimum, in case bans/picks are a bit overfocused), I'd not have 13/20 rune pages for various AP champs/matchups, etc.

By the pre-matchmaking preference I meant you'd have to put the roles in order, not pick one. The "enshrine the current meta" is the real issue with it, and what makes it impossible.

Ridiculous 6/1 zyra, 7/3 mumu, 1/0 blitz, 6/0 graves team with rambojax on 0/5. Lose teamfights all day because jax is always dead when we arrive to save him. Proceed to give no fucks and win 2v5 at drake because mumu and zyra are broken when comboing ults.

Jax goes back to pro throwing mode, we manage it anyway, he ends 13/14 despite losing lane and being useless all match. Sigh.

Had jungle lee who counterjungled 24/7 even though our lanes were weaker and pushed. He then proceeded to whine how much we suck and don't offer him support when half of their team comes to buttfuck him. Fucking prom queen junglers.
