Yeah I'm talking max 1.5 feet and not direct vertical drops, compared to my old Trek 7000 which I abuse.Originally Posted by Wrack

how much can i expect to spend on a decent beginner bike? i'd use it mainly for riding at ski resorts during the summers (fuck pedaling uphill) so i'd probably want full suspension yeah?
Think you'll have to assault Laythun on irc.Originally Posted by The Monkeysphere

What's this 500km challenge I keep hearing about? Endomondo challenge?![]()
check scott and specialized tbh, good places too start. if you're from the US you'll have lots of sexy alternatives like diamondback and ellsworth etc, but scott and specialized will have a much more rounded mid and low end selection. see what they have in your price range, you need to decide how much you are willing to pay. £500-£800 would be my starting point for a beginner bike, but thats your call, im sure you already know how much you wont spend on a bike, start from there and go down?Originally Posted by eshru
full sus will drive the price up, so if you're not going to be doing lots of naughty shit, skip it. saying that i'd go full sus every time, the extra comfort/ground-eating-ability is pro as fuck.
a hardtail will develop your riding skills quicker, teaches you to be more technical. full sus will let you drop into crazy shit quick, the ride being a lot more forgiving. but depends what you what from it, transport/health, cheap is fine, if you plan to do some riding for the sake of riding then you might want a few more $£$£ supporting you.
1st (serious) bike
carbon, horrible on the trails, rear strut had too much flex, perfect for the road though.
2nd bike
5inch travel XC bike, loved it so much, used it as my work bike for a while doing some courier work when i was a kid, having just sold the endorphin (1st bike)but after a while it seemed the X10 was better at eating some of the terrible roads we have in london
pics not mine just randoms from the net.
havent been into it for years so v0v could be hoverbikes by now :S
I picked up this bike on my birthday last month, haven't had much chance to ride it as most of the trails have been turned into marshland (by the record amount of rainfall we've had here in April) but its a very fun piece of kit. Not too pricey and handles some of the more difficult bits without any fuss. It also doesn't break like the old Mongoose MTB I had on the same trails.

Trials > Suspension
I have my hardtail mountain bike as well, which is better than a full suspension bikeOriginally Posted by Frools

sure is, if you only ever ride on smooth surfaces like a big babby

I only use my full susser (custom giant glory) to ride the Welsh downhills, couple of places local and the Alps. The only place I really need it is alpine downhill.
Other than that its a great heavy lump of hindrance.
downhill bike in only useful for downhills nonshock ¬_¬
Any of the Brits in here experienced with On-One Bikes? http://on-one.co.uk/? I'm thinking of buying a Scandal 29er frame this summer and building it up with SRAM X.9 components and a nice Reba fork.
Alternatively, anyone know a comparable 29er frame in the same price category?
Also, fullsus is for wussies, unless you're in the Alps![]()
I forgot comfy ride to the shops, broOriginally Posted by Frools

I know on-one make some quality jump frames, their XC stuff I don't know much about.
