Any suggestions on Asus boards for the i5-2500k?

I've been buying their stuff for the last few systems and I'd like to continue buying their boards.

Sure, what is your motherboard budget and is there any must have feature like SLI/Crossfire?

    Nothing fancy like crossfire/SLI.

I generally don't buy the most fanciest boards, usually ~$150 CAN is my top-end.

I'm looking to go with 8GB + an SSD, plus a nice big and quiet Scythe Mugen for cooling, so I'm not sure what sort of memory will be too tall and possibly interfere with the heatsink.

I generally buy from NCIX if that helps with the current issue.

Appreciate the help, fianlly done the semester and have had the tax refund money sitting in my bank since March.

Limited options at that price points. Intel motherboards these days start around $150 for a big brand. If you go MSI or ASRock you can get more for your $$ but then its not an ASUS.

In that case, are there some features that one should look for on the current gen of motherboards (besides the P67 (i think) models for overclocking).

I'm not opposed to spending more, I guess I should expect to considering these are the newest generation as well.

It really comes down to features you want vs need. I would say you need USB 3.0 and SATA 3.0 (6Gbs) and in most cases your going to get that at least the SATA since its build into the northbridge. Next since you plan on overclocking I would look at the quality of components, MSI and ASRock make a big deal out of the quality of components, as do ASUS and Gigabyte when your talking about their higher end boards. I am a Gigabyte fan my self the tend to make good quality overclocking boards with slightly better features than ASUS for around the same price or a little less. That said I have been seeing very competitive boards from MSI and ASRock which have always been value brands. They both seem to be pushing harder for that $150 market and letting the big guys go after the $200+ markets where people are buying because they have no sense :P

Coolermaster make solid cases. That one will be a good case, i think it looks like a trolloped herpes ridden whore but everyone has different taste.

Keep in mind too that the Antec I suggest has 3 120mm fans that move a very good amount of air but wont require hearing protection to be in the same room with your computer.

On the topic of motherboards what are the things I should be looking for when selecting one for a setup, are there specfic things to look at/watchout for and if so what are the most important?

Also on your list thing, why are the I7 cores only applied on the really high end setup? Are they overpriced over the I5's or do they not really add that much more performance?

Will be saving up some moneys now because I really need to get a proper desktop again.

I only use about 50% CPU power while gaming and I'm running an i5-2500K. You'll only max it running Video encoding, 3D rendering, compiling, etc. so you would only bother with an i7 if your doing serious dev or digital media work.

EDIT: or running lots of VM's or something I guess.

if your gonna go for the HAF series from cooler master get the X, just because of the dust filters. Also it has really cool features, its too flashy for my taste but overall really good case for the money

The only thing to look at for motherboards these days is brand, because it denotes qualtiy. Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, ASRock all make decent motherboards, Biostar makes ok ones and ECS still makes a few. In the intel world if your overclocking your getting a K cpu and a P67 chipset or nothing, if your not overclocking your getting an H67 chipset so you can use the onbaord video card. In AMD world its kinda the same 870G has graphics built in 870FX does not. The next thing to do is decide what your budget is and what features you need, onboard on/off/reset buttons may be a luxury you can live without, same with SLI/CrossFire if your really not going to buy a second GFX card.

As for i5 vs i7, its all about value the i5 is fast enough for most people so why suggest spending an extra $100 on a cpu they cant use. Where the i7 really shows its stuff is in heavily threaded apps or apps that need lots of raw cpu speed like video encoding or 3d rendering. Other than that the two cpus are exactly the same, just one has hyperthreading.

also for scrubs like me that upgrade their computers every 2-3 years (except the odd hard drive and memory, ok, maybe vga too) i'd rather go as high end as i can afford

See i would suggest the reverse, why spend all that money on a highend system and motherboard when your going to toss it all out in 3 years.

Re: Ryas' Sandy Vag Edition Hardware Guide

    i currently have a Q9550 :V

i am quite sure i could get some dolla if i sold the mobo + processor on ebay atm, could prolly cover 60-70% of the cost of an i7 + mobo

edit: it seems i could easily get 220-250$ on ebay from the processor alone, throwing 100$ for an i7 and 150$ for a mobo doesnt sound all that bad~

Alright, I've pretty much used your intel mid-range specs with a few changes

    2500k
    Gigabyte motherboard
    G.Skill 8GB
    Scythe Mugen
    OCZ Vertex 2 120GB

Any thoughts/words-of-warning before I start rounding the parts up?

That looks good the Gigabyte board is one I like, I only went with the MSI before because of the cost and features. Just make triple damn sure that the Vertex 2 your getting is 32/35nm NAND and not 25nm or the performance will be 1/2 of what it should be.

I'm going to be going over to my local parts store for the SSD so I can be sure.

I'm probably going to see what sort of costs it'll be for them to put everything together in my case because, frankly, I'm tired of handling delicate shit like CPUs and attaching heatsinks.

Maybe it'll be reasonable and save me from paying shipping for the NCIX parts.
