Just discovered the music subforum, and rushed straight to hip-hop thread. Much love to you guys for posting some stuff I didn't know, I shall be trying new stuff over the next days.
Distinct lack of gangsta shall be addressed when I get time to post some of my favourites.
As far as artists go, the classics are obvious:
Ice Cube (favourite of all time)
Biggie
2pac
De La Soul
The Roots
Dre
Nas
Jay-Z
Dr Doom/Dr Octagon
Snoop
Busta (am huge old-skool busta fan)
KRS-One
2LiveCrew (they're getting back together!!)
Beasties
The Beatnuts
DMX
So many more....
Have been fortunate enough, even all the way down here in NZ, to see Ice Cube, Snoop, Busta, and The Roots in concert - all great shows (Snoop the least of the lot actually, Busta and Cube beyond awesome).
As the single whitest, most middle-class person in the whitest most middle-class country on earth, I don't get to talk to many people about hip-hop as my friends are all crackas, so am excited by this thread
Also loving this at present, is doing the rounds but is actually worth it:

Yes I know it's not Hip Hop per ce once you start looking though you will find he has been sampled into a gazillion hip hop songs.
Got to love a bit of Galt, always had a soft spot for his version of Let The Sunshine In.

Reminds me of stuff like this too:

Have to thank people like Shadow & Cut Chemist and compilations like Ultimate Breaks and Beats, for raising my awareness of 70s funk, like you say, I'm not sure it counts as Hip Hop but it certainly seems to have had a hefty influence, even if just through samples. Some of the original tracks are great in themselves.
Spoiler:
We got a soul/funk thread yet...
New free EP by Soul Khan, not its best shit but still pretty cool.

Nice ol' skool mix

Got my ticket to KRS-One the other day - he hates flying so the mofo is coming all the way to NZ via ship
Am looking forward to hearing a sermon from "tha teacha" - a true icon.
Am also tweeting Ice Cube to see if he's hitting NZ when he tours Australia in April - otherwise will probably zip across to catch a show in Sydney, Cube is my favourite.
