What's a good, extremely cheap graphics graphics card with a HDMI connection. Also, it's not worth getting unless the audio is still fed through the HDMI cable, so I'd need to know a GPU wouldn't bork that.

    Question
If I need to disable SLI (some cuda based rendering engines don't use it) do I need to physically disable it by opening up the case removing the bridge or can I do it via the nvidia control panel?

    Also, any thoughts on this?

Does anyone have any experience with Palit?

Probably best to hold off for a couple of weeks if you're planning on buying a 780, the Radeon 290X is out middle of this month and 780 prices will go down, possibly quite seriously.

30 seconds of google fu suggests you can disable it in the nVidia control panel.

My thoughts on that is that it's wildly overpriced for its performance (see here: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/827?vs=768) A 7970 Ghz edition will come close to or outperform it in any game you care to mention for 200 less. Unless you DESPERATELY want nVidia, save yourself 200.

The r9 290x seems like it'll retail at over $700 - and it won't do so until the end of the month.

Went and bought the GTX 780 for 450ish, 50 cheaper than most reference gtx 780's.

Is it really next-gen though? Aren't there several aspects that carry-over and so it's not as much of a jump as we were hoping for?

Well as ever it'll push prices of current-gen hardware down. And yes, it's a refresh rather than whole new architecture, but still.

It's technically 'next gen', if only the next gen of AMD's GCN architecture (the original 7xxx series being GCN 1.0, the 7790 is GCN 1.1, the R9 290 series are GCN 2.0). It's still a fairly major jump in performance if the leaked benchmarks are to be believed, the top line 290X trading blows with the Titan. There's the new hardware audio stuff, too. And I'm really pleased to see AMD finally fixed that stupid limit of two DVI/HDMI monitors per card.

There likely won't be a whole new architecture from AMD for a long time, given how much they're pushing the Mantle API, which needs a GCN GPU to work, I wouldn't expect a clean-sheet core redesign for another 4-5 years.

    1080p single monitor gyx760 or 7870ge aka R9 270X is plenty , don't waste your money.

AnandTech have an interesting chart showing 7xxx series cards original price against the current price I have also added in the new 200 series cards that replace the 7xxx ones and their prices.
    Code:
Launch Price Video Card Current Price Replacement Card Replacement Price
    $549 Radeon HD 7970 $299 R9 280X $299
    $349 Radeon HD 7870 $199 R9 270X $199
    $149 Radeon HD 7790 $139 R7 260X $139
Quite expecting 290 to be ~$550 to $600 same as the 7970 came in at.

Still planning on a 760 or 770 4gb if the price drops enough.

Why? The 280 performs the same and costs 25% less than a 770. Also the 760 with 4gb is a waste of money.

4gb 770 not the 760 as that would be 2gb as it only uses a 256bit bus.

Either way, the 770 is not a very smart buy unless you are restricted by the need for CUDA. 4GB is not going to make the card any better.

Can you elaborate? The extra VRAM is surely the next step in terms of restrictions. I am planning on a 4GB card for my next build, but I haven't decided on what card - why not a 770?
