Re: What Video Card Should I Buy?

I run 2 monitors on mine at 1920 x 1080 and I have no issues with card memory at all so the additional 120pixels wont add any strain to the memory

The more interesting question is, how many clients are you running at the same time?

Here is a quick test with windowed clients running 1920x1200 with every in game setting at max:

No clients running 217MB used (should be less for you as you won't have a 5120x1600 desktop sucking up memory)

    Single client: 887MB docked / 676MB in space / 887MB re-docked

    Two clients: 1463MB docked / 1150MB in space / 1541MB re-docked

1x client usually, and if I do have another client it woule be on a 1280x1024 monitor.

But for things like crysis, crysis 2, MW series etc It will be fine at my current resolution?

The thing is if you are running out of memory you can always just disable HDR and lower AA and you will be fine.

As for the other games, I don't play them so no idea how much memory they need.

Don't bother with either. 6870s are going for less than 150 now:

If you're considering running a second Eve client in future I'd strongly recommend going with an AMD card because their memory management is quite a bit better than NVidia's.

Not entierly accurate, I upgraded from a 4870x2 2GB (1GB effective VRAM) as I couldn't run two windowed clients at 1920x1500 with all settings maxed out in the Incursion client.

That would be a GPU performance issue rather than memory. Eve in windowed mode isn't compatible with crossfire, so on the 4870x2 only one GPU has to do all the work. And a single RV770 isn't enough for full settings on two clients.

It's not a GPU issue when you go from 60fps to 0.5fps by enabling 8xAA on the second client nudging it past the available VRAM.

That card had no problem running two Tyrannis clients at 1920x1500 with 8xAA at 60fps as they used slightly less VRAM so remained under the 1GB barrier.

Performance isn't going to tank instantly to 0.5fps because you've pushed a little over the available vram. Having to re-load textures over the PCI-e bus isn't anything like that slow, the 8GB/sec bandwidth of a 16x slot is generally enough to sustain a few fps. It's much more likely you have hit a GPU performance issue - probably related to running high levels of AA. The RV770 doesn't deal well with AA above 4x when running multiple 3D apps (probably because its AA hardware was a quick fix to the RV670's basically broken AA).

(I should also point out that what happens with a 4870x2 isn't relevant to 5/6 series Radeons because the have much better in-memory texture compression, a side effect of AMD's work on bandwidth starved IGPs and APUs).

As I said, before the Incursion release I could run two clients 1920x1500 8xAA at 60fps (I always have vsync on).

Post Incursion I could run one client at 1920x1500 8xAA and one client 1920x1500 2xAA at 60fps. Once the second client was increased to 8xAA the performance tanked to 0.5 fps on both clients.

eve doesnt use anywhere near that much vram unless your in a mega battle. 1920 x 1080 on 2 screens & 1 clients full graphics on each monitor uses less than half that :S, i cant see 120 more pixels adding that much vram consumption

Those numbers were from the earlier build of the SiSi client today and all I did was undock and redock, reading the memory usage using GPU-z. Everything in the client set to High and the nVidia control panel set to default/application control.

I just ran two Incursion clients on a 1Gb HD6870 with full settings and 8x AA and didn't see anything like that, frame rate was about 25fps on each client. Now the 6870 is better at managing memory than the 4870, but I had three 1920x1200 screens enabled so the 6870 probably only had ~900MB to play with and the PCI-e link was throttled to down 8x.

(I was actually surprised the frame rate was so low, but I'm going to blame the crappy Athlon II dual core I'm stuck with while my Sandy Vag motherboard is away getting fixed)

So a 6870 is faster than a Nivida 560 Ti?

560 Ti's performance falls between the 6870 and 6950. Unfortunately it is priced much the same as the 6950.

This is just turnign into gfx card creep.. there is always something better if i spend another 20-30. This pisses me off no-end, I should get a budget and stick to it.

a 560 is 150, the Ti is 170, the 6950 is 200... I could go all the way to 300 like this!

Thats why i set budget ranges, yes you can always get a better card for more money. I think the 560ti and 6950 2gb cards are the best bang for your buck, but set your budget and then find the best card you can in that budget.

So Ryas...I got 2 monitors running at 1600x1200 and only a nvidia 465 gfx card. Used to be just fine for running 2 eve clients. Now with the new release, which card should I look at? 480GTX or 570/580 GTX?

    Proc: i7 930 2.8
    Ram: 6gb DDR3
