Titan X owner checking in....seems fun here

In my defence I have 2 points:
    A) I knew it was inefficient use of money in advance, but accepted that
    B) I was updating from a fucking 670.....

It's not a new thing, also not for AMD.
There where older cards that you could flash to 280.

As far as I understood it, you might brick your 480, unless you make sure it can run with the new voltage. So there are ~some~, but very minor, improvements.

Yeah, the increase in performance is minimal and most 480s don't have decent enough coolers to make it "safe" unless you add a water block, at which point you're probably wasting money over getting a completely different card

Most cards come with overkill voltages out of the box anyway, you can undervolt them and still run at good speeds most of the time. I remember my reference 7970s, both clocked at 925MHz @ 1.174v from the factory running 1050MHz @ 1v without a hitch. Made what was a fairly hot and loud setup significantly less intimidating, and even faster.

Vid here that mentions undervolting and what can be achieved with AMD's new software

Here's my take on the new RX500 series launch and sorting them in among the modern GPU options.

First, as the RX500's are refreshes of last years RX400's, they feature more mature silicon, manufacturing, and of course drivers but are not a generation jump over those cards.
If you're running at least R9 390, RX400, or Nvidia 970 or 1060 level, you won't see a meaningful performance upgrade here. The RX500 refresh simply isn't for you.

If on the other hand you're at or below GTX 770, and you consider upgrading but don't want to spend above USD$300 on a graphics card, there's some interesting choices here.

So let's classify the modern cards roughly from small to large:

RX550 - Playing ESports (Dota2, League, CS:GO). Use this if you'd play on an iGPU instead. Buy the RX560 unless the RX550 is at least 40% cheaper or budget is super tight. Also might be a good fit on a media PC, once single slot (and passive cooled?) versions come out.
RX560 - Entry level. The first PC you build for your sibling as a present, or the one you pay for by mowing lawns.
RX570 - Lower gaming level. Can play anything modern on 1080p but expect to run medium-high settings mostly.
RX580/1060 - Mainstream gaming level. Can play anything modern on 1080p and expect to run high+ settings. Those are very much tied for performance (winner depends on game). Unless your specific game of choice is better on the 1060, go with the 580, because of freesync monitors. If you're looking in the price range of a g-sync monitor, you should also be looking at a 1070 or higher. Regional pricing will of course shaft you regionally (mostly from behind). This class should get a good looking at when deciding on a new card and price is an issue because it should keep you running for 3-4 years, so spending a bit more today might stay that future upgrade for a year or such.
1070 - High gaming level. There's currently nothing in AMDs lineup that matches even tough the RX580 level comes within shouting range.
1080 - Very high gaming level. There's no point getting those if you don't run at least 1440p.
    1080Ti - I've got US$700 to burn on a GPU and want 4k.
Nvidia Titan (any) - LOL, look at what my money can do and I don't even care how much it costs. Please sell me a bridge. (Get the 1080Ti instead. Sorry Alex.)

There is also the AMD Fury somewhere between the 580 and 1070, if you can get it.

570 is really close in performance to the 580, we're talking less than 10% difference in averages at 1080 and even less difference at minimum framerates. For 1080 gaming, you won't see any difference regardless of settings.

Rx 470 best value for money for gaming unless you want to be "enthusiast"

Been using my 1080 sea hawk (liquid cooling) with the 21:9 1600p screen, and even without overclocking I've yet to get it above 60% load.

    So silent~
