More likely to be an (irrational) fear of the deep blue sea.

And if that's the case: don't watch the movie The Big Blue. A corny 80's flick that has some mildly terrifying footage of free diving. For the people who don't know what that is: diving straight down along a line to ridiculous depths (current world record over 200m) without a breathing apparatus. Using a weight to get down and a balloon to get up again, before your breath runs out, is one of the more extreme methods (and the one that got to that depth). Pic below is 88m without any such aids, without fins even.

To be able to go to that depth, take 3 min 30 to do it and be able hold your breath for that long under that kind of pressure. That's absolutely incredible

There's something about swimming in deep water, even if it's just 50m deep, that scares me as well. It is completely irrational, and doesn't stop me obv, but I still get this uneasy feeling, just because the bottom is 50m away rather then 5m away. A feeling of the abyss being down there.

Saw a feature about him and others with similar skills in other fields. Quite interesting what happens if certain "info filters" in your brain don't work as they should. They later checked it with photos taken during the flight and it was almost 100 % accurate.
