I would guess that to push the story up the wire a bit quicker, a quick snap with the phone to go a long with the mail will help until the pictures are moved off the cameras through the laptop and then out via e-mail to the news agency. A friend of mine does sports photography professionally and there is considerable lag between taking the pictures and getting them out. He shoots soccer, so he can only upload the images during half-time and after the game. News coverage needs its images quicker though.

Or more likely, she's recording video, since that's the big push now.
Which the 5d mk 2 she is using can also do, and better than an iPhone. (not sure about AF during video, but a canon fanboy will be right there to explain it). Camera is a guess, but it is either that or a 1D, which can do video as well, unless it is older, which might be a possibility.
