Monster-Drive ... you can adjust the tire-size from very small (like on a mini) to oversized truck tires. Useful in rural areas.

The 'M' is an 'N' that stands for Neutral.

    There's a tiny 'M' with a + and - above and below it to the left of 'D', m8.

Then this would be a semi-automatic rather than a manual wouldn't it? Doubt there's a clutch pedal on that motor.

Correct, there is no clutch pedal

Semi-automatic manual up/down shift. It's shit in pretty much all cars I've tried it in. Never seen the need for it on any standard car, the auto is so good now anyway.

It works pretty well in various BMW's but has no real purpose during regular driving. Its useful when you're trying to pull something heavy up a slope though as it allows you to keep engine in a lower gear then it would normally pick.

A friend of mine drives Mazda 6 (actually the car in the picture looks like it, cant see much though) and the semi-automatic mode is REALLY bad. The car actually accelerates slowly and its not because he shifts in the wrong moment. He only uses it when he wants to drive on a lower gear (cruisin at 2nd gear and shit). :/ meh the only thing im missing on my automatic-only is the gear indicator (i have no idea at what gear i currently am).

Very useful for icy/muddy conditions too.

Main use though is a marketing tool. I know so many people that hate automatics with a vengeance (why, I don't know?) and would never even think of buying one, but give them a "manual mode" and it suddenly becomes an option.

Porsche has their own "sports shift" transmission design that's miles more reliable, and "right" feeling. Mitsubishi paid royalties and copied this design into their INVECS-II semi-automatic that they put into the FTO (Model years 1994-2001?).

TLDR - Most sports shifts suck, and shorten the life of the trans. Porsche got it right, Mitsubishi copied it.

Dad took out an automatic gearbox Audi (some sort of sports edition, can't recall which one exactly as it was a few years back) as replacement when his old A6 (finally about to be replaced now as its iirc around 350000km are starting to show) was at the shop. It had a DSG transmission and switching gears in semi-manual was actually pretty fun and snappy when I took it for a spin.
