No need to be ashamed, I've seen the toughest blokes around cry after a blue bottle sting. The beach near my relatives where my mum grew up is pretty bad for them but growing up there they could spot them heaps away so luckily I never got stung.

Beach holidays walking up and down the beach popping these with a stick.

Was swimming once with my cousin and my dad after a storm had gone though and my cousin pointed out a box jellyfish going past. She said we'd be right where we were (not far at all from it) with the currents but me and dad still got out of the surf as fast as we could. That's the problem with surf life savers, they are nutters. 10 foot swell? No problem. Shark sighting? meh. Deadly jellyfish? who cares.
    Blue Bottles aren't they?

We get them here in NZ as well, sometimes the beach would be full of them. I have never gotten a sting from them but I've heard it is pretty bad.

A really cool thing about those Man o' wars is that there aren't a single organism like jellyfish but an amalgamation of colonial zooids all working together.

Ok, well since this sub-topic is going to be around for a while because you're all twats and don't know how to move on i'm going to embrace you all with a question. Do we know anything about the evolution of these things and if not is there a possibility that these fuckers are of extraterrestrial origin?

    fyp.

Although, living in central canuckistan means that there really are... uh... zero... jellyfish near me. Found one on the beach when I went to florida. Decided not to punt it, but my brother did. They fly sorta like a plastic bag filled with jello.
Very funny, Scotty, now beam down my pants.

One time I got tumbled in the surf and ended up with a stinger (basically what you get if you cross a real box jellyfish with kittens and marshmallows and hugs from your mum) stuck in my boardies. Luckily I'm a paranoid motherfucker and started keeping a little bottle of vinegar next to sunscreen so it only hurt like hell, but I still had to drop my dacks right there on the beach. It put me off the beach for a long time.

Since Corals, Anemones, all the different flavours of Jellyfish, Man O' Wars and nearly 1000 other species belong to the Cnidarian Phylum I'm going to have to go with no.

Since we're talking jellyfish in a traditional "That'll kill ya'" kind of way...

I was on a Dept of Sport & Recreation camp at Broken Bay back in the day and a kid brought an abalone type shell over to one of the camp staff to look at. Staff member knocks it flying out of the kids hand, sure enough, a small blue ring octopus was in it.

There's no known antidote. The only treatment is hours of heart massage and artificial respiration until the poison has worked its way out of your system.
Small things, they'll fuck you up. If you didn't read they grow to the size of a golf ball and have enough poison to kill 26 adults.

We get those a lot eastern coast of South Africa too. Luckily, we have Aloe growing on the dunes. If you don't have that, piss on the sting is what scouts taught me (but seriously, Vinegar is a better bet, besides not causing weird moments with your mates).
    meh

Doesn't urine actually either do nothing or just make it worse?

No idea. See afore mentioned Aloe, which does actually work a charm. Dunes on the Indian Ocean side of South Africa are literally teaming with it. Only cure I've ever used.
