The sun is "different" depending how north or south you are. Strangly enough in northern Australia I had a permanent tan but never burnt while down south I blistered fairly easy.

Yeah, from my experience it is far worse in the central and southern half of NSW with the south coast being crazy for sunburn within 10 minutes on a bad day. Canberra gets bad over January too. wtb ozone.

But when you go north of that it's nowhere near as bad, Gold Coast, which is almost at the Tropic of Capricorn, and you don't really feel it.

For those that don't know the places I'm taking about, central and south coasts are in red and Gold Coast is in blue.

The thing about sunburn is that you can clearly feel that your skin is burning and you've got plenty of warning before it gets to any of those stages. Maybe this is something that you have to learn while growing up in the sun though.

No you don't. Or I don't. Well granted I don't usually get blisters and shit, just red skin that eventually peels off.

Plus if you've grown up in the sun, it kinda means you don't have long periods of zero sun in the winter, roight? So you don't get the sun-shock I was talking about.

Other place I burn myself somewhere, ears or nose or something, is sailing in the spring. It's cold, you're fully clothed with more or less light winter clothing, while on shore you would be in t-shirt and shorts, and you don't feel a damn thing, not before it's too late. Water acts like a giant mirror, as does to a much lesser degree the white sails and boat. Same thing when skiing in the alps, but there I used to have even more clothing, hat of some kind and goggles or something.
