Hey now, we barely even use diacritics. And the few ones we do use are pretty basic. Not even a 27th letter like our neighbours have!

I had one exam for a multi award engineering GCSE at school which allowed handwritten notes.

Writing the notes in a way that they were easy to reference during the exam was probably one of the most useful things I actually learned to do.

Yup, plus it kind of psychologically forces you into actually revising if you're one of those people shit at actually doing anything in school.

The ability process and summarise bulk information is a far more important skill for the modern workforce than regurgitation of learned and revised information. Most pedagogists I've come across recommend a big shift away from traditional exam techniques and more focus on open book examinations.

Makes perfect sense. Personally this suits me well as I'm really good at finding info and remembering where it is, then distilling it, as opposed to memorizing shit I don't necessarily care about. Sadly I've had so few such exams, especially since I've studied languages for most of my uni career. Meh.
