DaVinci Resolve, a proper video editing and color grading software, is free with almost all tools unlocked.

Special effects can be an issue, but for video it's never been cheaper.

Still to expensive for my school to do well, but we're getting there.

smartphones have made us all capable of taking pictures, but there's a big gulf between that and being a photographer still

    90% of a picture's quality is the photographer's skill.

Well, depends what you want to do with the photos too, the final format. Or specific styles.

It's art, proper cameras are not going anywhere. The shitty cheap ones are.

Even with Blender now you can do 3D modeling and compositing and special effects for free. I don't think it's quite up to the level of Maya for photorealism and physics simulation but full movies have been made in nothing but Blender.

But yea it's more that less people are getting cameras now that a phone can do 99% of what they want, so the only people getting good equipment are people that want to do it as a real hobby or professionally. I'm happy with how economic things are going and maybe eventually they'll have cinematography phones with a bigger sensor and stuff like that.

Funny thing, I was just about to buy a large format camera but week later I lost my darkroom and all means for developing the negatives

In retrospection, my back probably is very grateful for that.

    I have a Sony A7 II.

Im currently on a trip to Prague and all I brought is my P30 Pro, as that's more than enough for travel photos.

There's some stuff the large camera can do, that the phone can't like proper flash photography and some more exotic lens combinations. But those are pretty fringe things that more or less require a proper photo shoot and isn't something to do on a leisure trip.

For the most part my camera is used as a video camera at school in a rig. I'm contemplating selling off the Sony and all still photography accessories and buying a camcorder. But then I don't do video for myself and that'd be quite an investment for work.

I also keep telling myself that I'll somehow sometime will find the time to put some of my more exotic lenses to use...

    1. Daring Scandinavian seafarers, explorers, adventurers, entrepreneurs world-famous for their aggressive, nautical import business, highly leveraged takeovers and blue eyes.
    2. Bloodthirsty sea pirates who ravaged northern Europe beginning in the 9th century.

Hagar's note: The first definition is much preferred; the second is used only by malcontents, the envious, and disgruntled owners of waterfront property.

As long as I get at least 8 hours in I don't really mind what time I get up. It sucks a bit when it is dark in the morning. Sleep is important.
