Neckbeards (like Liare) will get that.
That one guy that wrote most of the books from my childhood? Never could find any of his battletech books but had plenty of the star wars ones. I blame him for my terrible taste in literature.
Also reactors going critical is reasonably common in TT isn't it? and in MWLL it adds a definite tactical element.
:lore: I suppose, which brings this post to square 1 again.
In the TT, reactor explosions are an optional rule and pretty rare. To get one, a mech needs to take 4 engine crits in a single phase, then on a roll of 10 or better (~16% chance), the engine explodes. The rule expressly notes that it exists purely for the fireworks aspect. It my experience, they are quite uncommon until later tech levels, where firepower dramatically increase and more mechs die from CT destruction (which also means the mech cannot be returned to service). When it happens, it rarely ever changes the layout of the field, though I have seen a mostly functional clan marauder II get obliterated by stomping a scout mech like an egg.
In the main rulebook, there is a fluff section on fusion reactor explosions. Essentially, to get a catastrophic failure two things need to be happening: The reactor needs to be in overdrive and magnetic containment needs to fail instantly (including all fail-safes). In this case, the few grams of fuel will vaporize the engine shielding, causing an explosion as the engine shielding vapor expands. Commonly this is caused by the engine getting blasted to scrap, but can also be rigged as a self destruct by bypassing safety systems and installing a kill switch.
The same fluff section also notes that most 'explosions' are not really explosions, but air rushing into the vaccum inside a breached reactor, coming in contact with the plasma, and being forced right back out in a jet of flame.
As for MWO, I am happy they don't have the engine explosions. It was annoying that every single time someone died, you had to get away from them. I much prefer MWO's fallen/hunched over/standing mech carcasses.
