So, there's a rumour that all the laser boats won't like the newest patch.
    Just a rumour though.

    MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

pretty much everything up to around 1960's era technology is put out by ailing automated factories at the start of the 4th succession war, however by 3049 where this game takes place the technological renaissance kicked off by the publication of the Helm memory core is in full swing.

with a opressive but powerful cult running about destroying technology and the entire setting being in the aftermath of a literal apocalypse it's not really that surprising technology stood still or even degraded.

the 1st succession war was not just a "large war" it wiped entire planets off the map, battlemech engagements between forces numbering in the thousands of mechs and millions of men was the order of the day, nuclear, chemical and biological weaponry was dug up from hidden caches and employed and no faction was spared or spared their neighbours of the horrors of war.

by the time the first succession war ebbed out, humanity had literately reduced themselves to primitives, the war did not end because anybody won, but because there was not enough weapons, ships and bodies to continue the fight.

there's gonna be powercreep, i hope we get speciality ammo though, as that allows older weapon systems to remain relevant.

Different kind of war. The First (of four) Succession War lasted 35 years and saw the wholesale usage of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons. One planet saw the systematic extermination of 90% of its population in just five months. Very few R&D or production facilities exist anymore, and those that do function poorly. The Third (and longest) Succession War lasted 159 years.

Edit: It's almost Warhammer 40k-esque. There's even a religious cult in control of the last of the practical FTL communications technology (and, incidentally, Terra). If you want to send a message to another world the sender pays a fee, and the people who operate the technology have a set of rituals they perform to get anything done.
warhammer pretty much nicked the idea, sperged a fair bit of warhammer fantasy into the universe and ran with it.

The 3rd SW era's mad maxiness has really been romanticized, but really most of the successor states had enough mech production to replace the small scale losses that were typical of the time. You did however salvage everything. No point in letting good mechs go to waste. You also have to consider that most fiction of the time was published in-universe as ComStar, who had a vested interest in limiting the spread of tech. The 4th SW really showed how much military power successor states really had. Well, maybe not the CapCon.

As for the tech, keep in mind battletech is a) the tech of the 80s and b) runs off a rule set that is largely unchanged from the inception in 1985 that tried to use tonnage as the principle balance factor. They have massive and heavy computers and magic armor that can absorb hits from hypersonic 250kg slugs yet still be damaged by an assault rifle while only being a few cm thick. Oh, and MGs only shoot like 90 meters. A wizard did it is the best way to think of it.
regarding the assault rifle damaging shit, it all depends on where you hit, besides the PBI is already really weak, making mechs and tanks immune would have made them entirely pointless.

Cheers, and after playing a bit on a megmek server I'd have to agree with this. Didn't have people raging at me bc I am a total BT noob, but because I had to cut a 3 hour game short due to me needing to feed and socialize with local realspace denizens.

i can confirm that the Centurion is a billion tons of win.

you literately do not want to refit from the template of the default CN9-A configuration (AC/10-LRM10-2xMedium lasers, substitute for ER lasers, ultra AC and possibly a bigger LRM rack after adding Endo steel and FF) and it is nothing short of a amazing starter mech, the balanced loadout gives it the ability to work at all ranges, the autocannon hits fairly hard and the lasers are nothing to sniff at either.

I can confirm what he is confirming.

Although, for lols, try dual Ultra-5's. RAPE. Totally unversatile and prone to arms falling off ofc, but funny as hell.

I put two of those on an Atlas, worked quite well. Bring tons of ammo (literally) and KEEP FIRING. Super range, super RoF no heat and decent damage.

Gauss is probably better but 2x UAC5 is just cool.

10's are great, don't get me wrong. I just can't fit 2 on a Centurion, or I totally would.....

    I love autocannons.

I am going to choose the faction with best AC bonus (if there is something like that), pick the mech with the most fittable ACs and just AC the shit out of everything.

    I don't sports.
I don't play, watch, care about or understand sports. At all. I do not sports.

I suppose you could put dual AC/10s on a Catapult K2, although I think it would require a lot of sacrifices. Haven't tried, Catapult chassis is pretty bad at infighting.

You probably could if you stuck an XL engine in, but as you say i'm not sure it'd be worth it.
