its also important to note that the missiles just are not that big anyway, a SRM is roughly the size of a modern day javelin while a LRM is roughly the size of a modern day AT-4, what they lack in size they make up with volume, they are all literately a small guidance package, a small rather weak engine and a massive HEAT charge, that's why they don't always hit.

And in this time period they barely know how to build anything anymore (what with hundreds of years of war destroying infrastructure), so the guidance systems are pretty crude.

Not to nitpick but making guidance systems for missiles seems to me a whole easier then making big walking robots on two legs with fusion reactors that are actually effective weapon platforms. Also, if human history is anything to go by then a state of war is by far the time when weapons development proceeds quickest.

Tbh, the Battletech setting makes very little sense from a logic stance. Just don't look at it too hard

Although, it wasn't the state of war that was the problem. it was the fact the war nuked 95% of all industrial and technology bases in the Inner Sphere. Tech does advance fastest during war, but only if you have factories and scientists.

Didn't they lose the know how to make mechs too though?

So they were just passed down hereditary lines as fairly rare but highly prized war machines

Mostly, not entirely. They still made a few per year, but didn't know how to design them. Basically they could keep the remaining factories going at a low level, but had nfi how they worked.

A wizard did it. Hoping they won't run the same powercreep as is becomming more evident in WoT.

Different kind of war. The First (of four) Succession War lasted 35 years and saw the wholesale usage of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons. One planet saw the systematic extermination of 90% of its population in just five months. Very few R&D or production facilities exist anymore, and those that do function poorly. The Third (and longest) Succession War lasted 159 years.

Edit: It's almost Warhammer 40k-esque. There's even a religious cult in control of the last of the practical FTL communications technology (and, incidentally, Terra). If you want to send a message to another world the sender pays a fee, and the people who operate the technology have a set of rituals they perform to get anything done.

The publishers have actually been putting out a crap ton of fiction for the 2750 era, for the time around and during the fall of the Star League. It is mind boggling from even a point of view after the tech renaissance of the 3050s-60s how massive the armies then were...and how many planets disappear between 2750 and 3050.

The 3rd SW era's mad maxiness has really been romanticized, but really most of the successor states had enough mech production to replace the small scale losses that were typical of the time. You did however salvage everything. No point in letting good mechs go to waste. You also have to consider that most fiction of the time was published in-universe as ComStar, who had a vested interest in limiting the spread of tech. The 4th SW really showed how much military power successor states really had. Well, maybe not the CapCon.

As for the tech, keep in mind battletech is a) the tech of the 80s and b) runs off a rule set that is largely unchanged from the inception in 1985 that tried to use tonnage as the principle balance factor. They have massive and heavy computers and magic armor that can absorb hits from hypersonic 250kg slugs yet still be damaged by an assault rifle while only being a few cm thick. Oh, and MGs only shoot like 90 meters. A wizard did it is the best way to think of it.

Also, I haven't logged in or played for like 2 weeks now. Solo TDM is too random, and voice comms are filled with so many neckbeards and sperging retards (I never realized that nerd lisps actually still existed, wtf) that it's not even fun to try to get random teams going. We definitely need more FHCers in there.

Without punching and kicking the Charger can never be a good mech. But omg I loved a punching and kicking Charger in battletech.

    I don't sports.
I don't play, watch, care about or understand sports. At all. I do not sports.

Did they ever mention if kicking and punching would be implemented ingame? Whenever I see a more human looking mech currently, I can't help but be annoyed that the only use the human-like arms have over a handful of small side turrets is to get shot off. (I would also love to see the arms (and aiming reticules) wave around a bit as the mech balances, but that's probably a job for a more sim-like game)
