most mechs have anywhere between five and twenty variants up trough the eras, many of them follow the same basic theme being upgrades upon the same production lines.
take the Hunchback, its a fucking terrible 50 tonner (no, it's not good, its specialized and very effective in its own niche, but it's not a good fucking mech) with a couple of lasers and the mother of all autocannons in one variant, but another production line make the "swayback" version that carries a lot of medium lasers, and there's also LRM and SRM based variants, as well as mechs with alternate autocannon fits.
Not really best setups, more like optimized. It's going to be more like BF3 or EvE than anything else. Shotgun vs assault rifle. Artillery vs Pulse Lasers, LBX vs. ERPPC. From the looks of the demo videos, this is going to follow the same style as previous MW games. Where as with tanks you deal with penetration or not, while MWO it's all percentile based. So while a small laser doesn't do much damage, 4 of them on a fast moving Raven will strip layers of armor off of an assault mech bit by bit or pummel exposed weapon systems until they fail (say goodbye Atlas LRMs) while managing heat easily. Give and take.
Wait until the whining starts about "legging" when fast movers start disabling/slowing larger, cumbersome mechs.
Erm, in my experience it's usually lighter mechs that get legged because they consist of 70% legs and 95% MAD SPEED.
Russian Death Leggers/Laggers representin'~ o7o7o7
Your tier system gonna be ruined by Ravens jamming (or at least painting and barraging) your azz.
Haven't found "legging" to be of too much issue so far, of course people are still working out best tactics etc so who knows.
Generally best tactics for light mechs is circle strafing, dipping and ducking, or in certain light mechs (e.g. SRM boats) running up behind a heavy and alphaing them in the arse (my fave)

So worth getting into or staying away?
If its as grindy feeling as WoT I'll leave it the fuck alone.
If you were a superhero you'd be The Incredible Fucktard with your ever-ready sidekick Douchetard Boy. Together, you fight intelligence and common sense where you go.
Dropped a bucktewenty cos why the fuck not.
I think I will enjoy the lights the most with a Benny Hill theme applied.
Also jumping into the air and seeing if I can land on a mechs head/cockpit.
Someone update the first post with how to buy this etc?
