most fun ive had playing support so far was with a mundo + MF lane bot, pretty much singlehandedly zoned a corki and janna so far back that they were 3 levels behind by the time we were 7

and still did well midgame because, well, mundo is mundo and meat cleavers do massive damage regardless of what items you have

And in fact, the more HP items they have, the more damage they take, so he only gets even more of a threat lategame. <3

I honestly would not build that. Unless your team is winning so badly it doesn't matter anymore and you kill 2 enemy raxes and find yourself with 2500 gold.
If you want to try something cool though go solo lane in normal, build him tanky, get nashor tooth or wits end and triforce. Pretty fun.

So I got Alistar free for some YouFace promo shit, and decided to play him the other day. 4-0 with him so far, and having a blast. Two hard CC, a mass heal, and a "lol I never die" ult is my idea of support fun. Build order is roughly Philo > T1 boots > HoG > Tabi/Merc > Aegis > (I've never actually gotten any more gold than that, but probably Sunfire > Warmog's/Force of Nature) with shittons of wards thrown in. Faerie/3 ward/2 pot to start, skill order QWEEE. By the time the pots have run out, I can spam good heals, and I can stay in lane for probably 15 minutes(barring death) if I want to.

Haven't seen any guides that seemed to be much good, but this is working nicely. Am I making any obvious mistakes, or is that about right? Also, is laning with someone mana-heavy and taking Mana Manipulator to start something worth considering, or is the delay on Philo not worth it?

You can't get a mana manipulator because then you wouldn't afford wards.

With current changes to mp5 runes and mana regeneration on champions (it's up for about a year i think) there is no need in game to use it. Usually unless someone have no idea what to do you should be able to play without buying any mana regen items whole game on ad carries and be just fine. Enough from replenishing in fountain when buying. You really need a ward at start, just start a custom game, buy a ward and than think what you could buy to start a game. This is an absolute minimum, having more wards than 1 will let you stay in lane much longer and get more xp and maybe even spend some aggressively.

Good start as well, if you play Ali especially is boots ward pot. Otherwise if you do not know how good you will do in lane, mana thing 3 wards 2 pots is perfect. Give you huge sustain (400hp from pots), 3 wards to adapt to lane (will explain later - i could actually do a small guide for supporting bottom i someone is interesting - would cover warding and adapting to lane) and a part from gp5.

I also wouldn't stay in lane that long as a support. I tend to be backing first time around the 5 1/2 minute mark to finish up my philo stone. 6~ if I've already run out of wards and just need 1 to tide the lane over under I can back and get a couple more.

For more mana hungry chars I have rushed a mana manipulator, although if I've got to contend with sorakas sustain I find it's almost mandatory unless your really out-playing the lane. Saying that though, I did see l0cus run a tear on support sona last night, and that's kind of got me wondering about swaping it out. Would probably solve the late-game issue I have with sona where I'm out of blue stuff after what doesn't feel like a very long period.
