Our debt to GDP ratio was heading upwards before the 2010 election. Indeed, the last budget before the election had us running at a deficit of 10% of GDP. It's not feasible to bring that deficit down inside of one budget period (i.e. one year), so it's being reduce piecemeal. The current argument in the UK isn't whether cuts should be made, it's about how many cuts should be made.
