    RIP Twitter

The question mark will be removed when the site fail whales for good.
Initially, I gave the site until the end of 2024 to go the way of Myspace after the takeover. Now, I'd be surprised if it didn't implode before the end of the month.

Whether you intend to leave or not, here's a useful tip:

Having recently joined, I can tell you that the people over there prefer to refer to it as #Fediverse. Here's a primer: https://fedi.tips/

The biggest takeaways as of now (in comparison to the Birdy)

    - Good accounts to follow don't come by as easy as in Twitter due to its decentralized nature. You gotta be a bit active yourself. A site that helps find the equivalent #Fediverse account, if there is any, of a Twitter account is https://fedifinder.glitch.me/ . https://pruvisto.org/debirdify// works similar, but has performance issues lately due the amount of people joining

    - It has "Favorites" and "Boosts" for Toots (its Tweet equivalent). At first glance one might mistake Favorite for Like and Boost for Retweet, which they kind of are. *But* unlike Likes, a Favorite doesn't raise a Toot's visiblity. Someone explained to me it's more like a "Thank you" to the author. Boost act both as a raise in visibility and like a Retweet. And it's more important, because you gonna boost Toots from accounts/instances of which others aren't aware due to the decentralized nature of Mastodon. So that helps spreading out good accounts/content to follow.

    - If you found an account you want to follow, it can become awkward to follow it, if it's not on your instance - and chances are good that it will not be there. Clicking on the account will then lead you to their instance ... but you're obviously not signed in there. And different instances work differently on how they proceed from there. So for me the most convenient way is to copy the address (form: @yournick@yourinstance) from that profile and then paste that into the search box in the upper left corner of your homepage. Your instance will then search for said account and if found, let's you follow it with a simple click on the "+" next to it.

Still it's worth looking at as a case study of decentralized social networks. I wonder what will come of it.

Right? We live in interesting times.

Although i have to say, for all the ways that twitter was an absolute Hellscape, it was unique. nowhere else could I have had casual conversation with People who are writing books I read, follow the most fun World Bollard association account, get a picture of the SOHO sun observoatory every morning in different wavelengths, read tweets and conversatinons with other neurodivergent people, all in one app, on one site.

If it truely vanishes (which it increasingly looks like) we will feel it's absence in all parts of (public) life.
In a way, it was an achievement for us as a civilization. (ok, slightly overstating this, but not too far off)

This is exactly what Elon seems to fail to realize. He sees it as a pile of ineficient code, which is factually incorrect as this is not an embedded piece of software made to be run on whatever hardware device has. His latest rant about rpcs shows how little he understands how it works. Yet he treats it as if the value of the platform was purely based in the code that powers it. Reality is the complete opposite, it can be as shit as it can as long as it works, but real value comes from the community or ecosphere it enabled. Politicians, authors, celebrities, public figures etc all on same platform giving it credibility to be abused by company representatives and advertisers to shove their content disguised as the former was twitter's modus operandi. It was also instrumental as mean of communication during last few revolutions or political movements trying to gain traction in extremly hostile local environment. To put it in blunt terms nobody gave a fuck if you're using your distributed nosql database efficiently as long as you let people speak. And as a selfproclaimed guardian of free speech his actions are sure going in a completely opposite direction.
As I said to Erich, you can take a man from South Africa but you sure can't take South Africa from a man. Maybe someone should pen him a memo his software company employees are not the same as his father's mine 'employees'.
Oh and Trump had right idea but wanted to build wall on the wrong border.

Elon Musk sent a flurry of emails to Twitter employees on Friday morning with a plea.

“Anyone who actually writes software, please report to the 10th floor at 2 p.m. today,” he wrote in a two-paragraph message, which was viewed by The New York Times. “Thanks, Elon.”

About 30 minutes later, Mr. Musk sent another email saying he wanted to learn about Twitter’s “tech stack,” a term used to describe a company’s software and related systems. Then in another email, he asked some people to fly to Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco to meet in person.

Twitter is teetering on the edge as Mr. Musk remakes the company after buying it for $44 billion last month. The billionaire has pushed relentlessly to put his imprint on the social media service, slashing 50 percent of its work force, firing dissenters, pursuing new subscription products and delivering a harsh message that the company needs to shape up or it will face bankruptcy.

Now the question is whether Mr. Musk, 51, has gone too far. On Thursday, hundreds of Twitter employees resigned after Mr. Musk gave them a deadline to decide whether to leave or stay. So many workers chose to depart that Twitter users began questioning whether the site would survive, tweeting farewell messages to the service and turning hashtags like #TwitterMigration and #TwitterTakeover into trending topics.

Some internal estimates showed that at least 1,200 full-time employees resigned on Thursday, three people close to the company said. Twitter had 7,500 full-time employees at the end of October, which dropped to about 3,700 after mass layoffs this month.

Mastodon is indeed the obvious choice for the short-medium term.

    However, consider the following...

Musk laid off half the workforce and (according to some reports) three quarters of the remainers decided to go home when Musk gave his "go hardcore or go home" ultimatum.

That's a lot of coders, moderators, marketing types, and high-level executives with experience of doing social media things twiddling their thumbs. I wouldn't bet against at least one group of them having something good ready to go within a year.

Best part of this is watching one of my coworkers, who has been saved by the almighty Musk, shuffling about nervously with a slight twitch in his right eye. Think I'll suggest to him next week that I might consider buying Tesla stocks now that they've dropped more than 50% which was something I said last year when he was pestering me about it.

Tesla shares are still vastly overpriced though.

Oh yeah. I'm not actually touching that with a ten foot pole. Drop another 30% and get rid of the Man-Baby and it starts to look interesting.
