Well huh, I thought the thermal sights saw in something other than infra-red. Oh duh FLIR does the same color scheme, never mind. Last random ramble, would the tank be as easy to spot with NVG's as they are normally?

yes, but the problem with NVG gear is that its fucking terrible all round, even modern GEN III+ kit is not useful for tank-on-tank ranges compared to IR due to a lack of detail.

its useful for a infantry man trying to spot shit at ranges up to 300 meters at night, but lacking in depth and detail beyond that, IR makes this go away as it does not rely on the visual spectrum to show stuff.

If you can spot a tank with NVG's then he's already spotted you unless you have some sort of bright background. Remember, tanks have NV and FLIR capability way past personal NODs. Doesn't take much to break up the pattern and blend against NVG monochrome unless there's some illum going on. If they have time to set up these panels then they probably have time to set up some camo netting. Otherwise they would look like black lunch boxes in the open.

Oh I know NVG's are not all that fantastic, anyone who's had to wear them when the moon either didn't rise or the sky was heavy overcast can attest to their occasional marginal usefulness. It seems more of a way to counter tanks getting obliterated by air power or other advanced targeting systems by frustrating a lock on.

edit: though 'pixelating' does help annoy NVG's though it's probably not the same type of pixelating as the newer BDU's which are markedly better at blending in with the background compared to the older style. Not sure why I'm going off on this tangent though...

posting to post posts I guess.

even the bigger tank mounted NV systems are not that good, the problem with them lies in the green-on-black contrasting that effectively means something decently camo'd, like say a tank wont stand out unless its highlighted against something else. (skyline, trees in the background, that sort of thing)

and unlike in daylight, you dont have the advantage of color perception to catch the potential irregularities.

Read something about this yesterday, BAe said something about there being the possibility of using this at other frequency ranges, starting with IR. Also, the panels are supposed to be fairly robust, so leaving them attached to vehicles shouldn't be a problem, and as far as the vehicles waste heat is concerned, they were planning on using its fuel as a heat dump (apparently already done in some stealth aircraft).

Or they could make a weapon that would use the excessive heat.

They have to drop shell casings somewhere as well, why not weaponize them? Or the heat from the exhaust gases from the motor?

Oh yeah, because that would be retardedly inefficient compared to, you know, shooting high explosive shells from the conveniently located gun turret that is the entire point of having a tank.

Only 3rd world tanks use cased shells

If there's going to be hot exhaust heat-masking system might as well be dropped. In fact same heatsinks will be used to cool it.

In case you didn't know the main gun is not the only tank's weapon.

unless thery're dealing with some superhigh tech, i suspect this'll be used primarily for camping.
as said, these things are gonna be fragile, and i doubt it'll be cheap enough to be cost effective to use it in combat
also, all the heat of the running tank must go somewhere

FU i want to play WoT now

Sounds useful, but not sure about the practicality of fitting it on MBTs. Rocket artillery, like the M270, would probably be an ideal platform to be outfitted with a kit like this.
