The Retro Thread - reliving our childhood games

TIE Fighter has always been the game that felt the most special to me.
Playing the bad guys with the angle that we are here to save the galaxy.
The whole game is just a brilliant piece of story telling.
I recently came across TIE Fighter Total Conversion, and thought FHC needs a thread dedicated to our childhood games.

Some have been blessed with a "remake".

Replaying Freespace -> Freespace 2 and continuing with Blue Planet should keep ones space flying itch scratched for a while.

Master of Orion 2, just tried it again last week and it is still pretty good tbh.
I would have to link Xenon 2 for a proper childhood game of mine but i guess MoO2 is old enough to count. :P

I still play MOO2 every once in a while. It's on STEAM as well these days so you don't have to worry about scrolling too fast.

Still think they got the space battles right in a way that Stellaris and Wargamings Master of Orion never managed.

I tried running Emperor, but it won't launch at all after installation. Which ISO did you download?

behold, Not Star Controller 2, Ur-Quan Masters might as well be a classic game on it's own at this point with how old it is.

I never got to testing Emperor because I got derailed by Elden Ring recently, but Dune 2000 worked with whatever they posted on the link I linked.

http://exult.sourceforge.net/ this thing had features rpg developers were boasting about for the next 30 years, still are nowadays, and they still can't get it right. Weather cycles, night and day cycles, npcs behaving in an immersive manner (schedules etc.), pretty much all the things that are being promised with each and every new release nowadays.

Betrayal at Krondor is still amazing. So ahead of it's time.

If you managed to get it runing when it came out, you were in for an adventure of a lifetime. Few games compare.

I remember reading through most of the books years ago. Good times.

I remember playing Betrayal at Krondor, and loving it. But I can't remember the story at all.
Tried playing Dark Sun, Shattered Lands a year ago. But it was so old and painful to play, it was ruining my experience.
Instead I watched a play through on Youtube and it was just as good.

BaK still holds up. Mostly because of having semi modern interface. Fun fact, I scored my longest play session with it. Started midday friday and mid sunday sleep got better of me. Ah the perks of being a teenager.

It's a shame it was so good it killed the genre. I don't know why indies are not trying to tap that market. I would buy something similiar in a heartbeat.

It is a bit weird that nobody has tried to do "Freespace, but with voxel damage modeling!" or something similar.

Oh man, I remember that one. Had the CD and the book along with it. I never really got into the series, but my brother was an enormous fan.

On another note, something that I find myself always coming back to is Master of Magic https://www.gog.com/en/game/master_o...0426711ca0fddd. Old 4X game a la Civ in a fantasy setting where the unit combat is turn-based. Played the hell out of it when I was younger, and still find myself playing it every now and then.

    OH MY GOD THAT GAME

I spent so many hours playing MoM back in the 90s. I rarely finished a game, I was playing on an old 486 and the save files had a nasty habit of getting corrupted once I was far enough along. But man... that game was so incredibly unbalanced, but who cared, it was single player. I loved it.

Shit, maybe I'll download it again, I need a little break from DRG.
    Quarantined and loving life.

Age of Wonders 3 is a good spiritual successor.

Or if you like extra autism with your games, there's that https://store.steampowered.com/app/7..._of_the_Faith/
