I don't trust dedupe on VM disks. One fuck up and you've lost a few machines. Also the overhead for io kills all of those machines that probably shouldn't have been VMS in the first place.

deduping is not something you do live unless you're monumentally retarded, it's a weekly task run in the wee hours in the weekend where nobody is around, prefrably just before your weekly to-tape dump.
as for data loss, that's what backups are for, i have yet to see a single bit lost this way for the past ten years.

We do dedupe live on our file san no issues (emc+raidz). I'm not having it on production server vmdks for any reason ever.

Its once again a matter of picking the right tool for the right job.

:sigh: I wish they would remove the ability to format tables in every spreadsheet software. This seems to be the only reason why spreadsheets seems to have become the defacto "data storage" standard for all non-techies ...

So the guy that did this to managed to expose documents covered by the national security act to unauthorised people (fortunately nothing actually important, they don't put them on the public network). He won't be working on that contract anymore and won't receive federal clearance in the future. While he's not lost his job and won't be charged he can no longer work for any government department and a lot of large organisations as they almost all need federal clearance. Pretty career limiting move for basically 4 mouse clicks.

Go to pub for lunch because its friday. Drink (I dont usually but meh). Get back to the office.. I'm a bit of a light weight so a little drunk.. Get a ticket

Lana is unable to open a .xlsx file she is receiving a 'the file could not be opened because it has been encrypted with software that is not installed on thes computer'
I stared at it for like 5 mins thinking "I cant fucking remember sending in this ticket" before I realised it wasn't me.. And then I remembered Lana isn't my actual name..

Good luck, that and DPM are a bit annoying to manage through PS with how some of it is set up.

We've "inherited" the CCTV system for a little while until a specialist company is found to handle it, I'm guessing my boss agreed purely so he'd have something to do. It's been a few days of up and down ladders sorting them out, moving some and figuring out how the server, DVRs and client machine all work together (and what passwords work for them).

Replicated all the classroom ou's with ad OU membership rules using a nifty little script. It's nice. unfortunately i'm now finding loads of machines not on the network / not on SCCm or just plain not on. Going to have to check every classrom m8 o7

Ouch, that could take a while. We've got plans to double check our asset register over may half term but we've only got ~500 devices so it shouldn't take more than 2 or 3 days with two of us doing it.

device / asset tag / room ? It's a dirty job but has to be done innit.

I'm going to need to re-image ~1500 machines over summer because none are patched, nor have been since 2012, and everything has about 50 applications installed.... If we can get this right now then that will be a far easier job. If the multicast doesn't melt the network.

Due to the VENOM (http://venom.crowdstrike.com/) incident I had to manually reboot all our instances at Rackspace otherwise they would do it for us. Easier to keep the replication / sync happy when you do it yourself. Think I'm done, verify the schedule, nothing pending.

Suddenly 5 instances drop out at once. panic. Somehow totally unrelated, possibly a routing fuckup somewhere, can access from internal not the external. Reboot somehow fixes the problem.

WINS is an advanced stage of brain-cancer, once you touch it you are forever lost from humanity and will eventually turn as dark, evil and bitter as a cold cup of coffee left to evaporate in the sun.

WINS when set up correctly and working used to be a great workaround for a domain not having any form of DNS. WINS and DNS do not mix very well and WINS will override DNS is a lot of cases. This means on some of my clients we have had issues for literally years that WINS has successfully masked. One WINS error and a whole site vanishes.

It does my head in that its still in use and still the default on a lot of windows systems.

Today, DNS scavenging harvested a DNS entry corresponding to an active DHCP lease.

I have no idea why or how. But this is scary. Welp
