Drivers are added to server PLASCCM1201 - the MP on site THC in boundary POPLAR. This site has a DP, PLASCCMDP01. Machines within the POPLAR boundary and THC Site pick drivers up from there.

Now, a machine on site HCC installs it's OS from SC-SCCM-01 on site HCC in boundary HACKNEY. This DP seems to correctly service drivers which have been added to the Entire Hierarchy including drivers over at THC, but we have no clue how they get between sites. Or if they even do or do they get proxied.
it's jumping the boundary and talking to PLASCCMDP01, you can break this behaviour by making PLASCCMDP01 a protected distribution point (or something like that, there's a distribution point specific setting that governs this behaviour, and microsoft renamed it like twice during SCCM2007)

note that it's using BITS to actually pull the files, so it looks like boring old HTTP traffic in a sniffer, it's probably also why you're wondering how the fuck they are doing it.

elderly TLDR that is relevant, drivers aren't special* in a deployment sense, its just a software package like any other, if it cant find what it's looking for it will happily waltz out on the WAN and bother the rest of your infrastructure.

i thought i had logs of it doing something else but all the logs i had are from the wrong site. oh well.

Please don't teach me what to do with my pc.

Sorted out my sccm problem. Turns out if you deploy a single patch to some servers that already have a patch that supersedes it, but never actually installed the original patch, sccm has no idea how to report it so they just sit in 'unknown' forever.

this morning's WTF is trying to get DFS to behave on someone else's domain which is probably fucked.
The DC's won't join the namespace because their C: drive cannot be found.
    Nice.

    well, that's a new one!

i kinda experienced something like that myself once when we where trying to run a physical but diskless DC over the SAN, you doing anything like that ?

neh the domain is just fucked. bit of CLI and a bit of waiting for replication (between 4 dc's on the same site (Default-first-site-name), subnet and VServer) fixed it.
And setting up reverse DNS. oh and adding the Subnets to AD.
it's always amateur hour over there.

it could be worse mate, imagine a DNS server incapable of providing reverse DNS, not because it's configured wrong, it's configured by the book, but because the underlying DC is so fucked it barely realizes it's a domain controller, and it's idiocy is infectious and transferable.

I know you probably can't do this, but i've had 2 irretrievably fucked DC's in the past, one of which was a CA as well. Both were fixed by putting a 2012R2 CD, telling it to upgrade and coming back in the morning to a working 2012 DC.

Very much a "hold my beer" moment.

I'm considering doing this to our main file server tonight, but to 2016 so I can enable dedupe.

I still do not have access to my new clients password database.. It's amazing what you can do with guess work.

there's no "hold my beer" over doing that if your setup is remotely sane, you've got shit on tape and backup services to pick up the slack.

oh sure, it might fail, but who cares ? there are other DC's to talk to and other certificate servers the clients can talk to, ideally the setup can take up to 70% "casualties" on the server-side before services break down, it might go funny for lack of resources to actually handle incoming traffic a bit before that, but a service too busy to handle all the requests is still online in my book.

    :Phone rings:

CEO assistant: "Could you have a look, boss' machine acts weird?"
Me: "Have you tried to restart the machine already?"
CEO assistant: "Yes ... no ... I don't know. Could you have a look please?"
Me: "OK, so I will come over to boss' office and will restart the machine."
CEO assistant: "Yes ... well, I don't what you'll do."
Me (hoping that the answer would be "Oh, well try that first ourselves."): "I just told you what I will do: I now will come over to simply. restart. the. machine. Is that what you want me to do?"
    CEO assistant: "Yes."

Me walks over and restarts the machine, turns around and walks back to my place ...

I could have instead, you know, for example keep coding that interface the whole company waits for since a couple of months and has just been greenlighted this week by the uppers-there-are and now everyone keeps bugging me about when it finally will be done.

CEOs are not normal people. They are entrusted with running multi billion dollar companies but also have no idea how literally anything even remotely technical works and frequently get suckered by scammers..

Sometimes I wonder how they manage to tie their own shoes, then one day I noticed that all of upper management has slip on shoes..

The blame here doesn't go to the CEO, though. The assistant is a complete waste, OTOH. You'd assume that one managing a CEO's schedule and tasks and such would be at least below-average capable of handling that absolute niche piece of software (NOT), completely unknown in any modern office environment (NOT), called "Outlook". But that's too much to expect here.

    - Requesting the right to 'Send on behalf of', but not capable to actually send emails on behalf of? Check!
    - Managing the CEO's calendar, but not capabale to switch from the pesonal calendar over to the CEO's one? Check!
    - Requesting that old contacts from long (we're literally talking decades here) gone CEO's be provided/exported as a PST, but not knowing how to open a PST file? Check!

I could go on. And that's just for Outlook. There's that other strange program called "Word", which poses similar, divine knowledge requiring challenges, i.e. saving a copy of the current document to a different folder/with another name.

I'm really not expecting VBA macro coding or Outlook forms creation type of knowledge. But for a dedicated CEO's assistant ("Assistent der Geschäftsleitung") job, the knowledge how to send emails on behalf of the CEO, should be one of the most basic requirements.

    [Added]
Oh, and it didn't surprise us the least that that assistant managed to email a scan of the CEO's monthly credit card bill to literally everyone.

Yesterday I destroyed a brand new KVM by closing the lid of it while there were some plastic stand offs on the keyboard. Literally the first thing I did after arriving at a clients new office to begin migration work. The hinge was really stiff so I didn't notice any extra resistance when I closed it over

      Spoiler:

      Spoiler:
Worth $1200 maple bucks apparently, cant get a replacement panel because it's some custom massive 4:3 screen so the whole rack mounted KVM needs to be replaced
