This is true. I have been a 'smart' customer exactly once in my life and this was when my modem blew up 2 months after leaving the ISP I had been working for (phone and internet were still with them) and the call went something like "Hello random helpdesk person that I trained, can you have a word with Sam and find out of that modem I got for the ADSL 2 trial is still covered by warranty". It wasn't..
Every other time I have called them they have failed to notice I still have the staff discount applied to my account (going on 8 years now) and treat me like every other dumb idiot.. Which is good because "Yes I have tried turning it off and on ag... oh wait.. shit that worked".
