So, the CIO just ordered the several weeks' worth of DB backups be dropped in favor of a single, overnight, DB server image.

    This will end in tears.

Today I finally got a function of my master tool set (read powershell scripts) working. All it does is pull the jurisdiction of a server from our CMDB and present it as text. This has allowed me to run it against 2 lists I have had laying around.. The first list is all the physical servers in one of our DCs, where in I discovered a far amount of them do not actually belong to us.. The second is the official server list that we use to calculate the customers bill.. For the last 2 years we have been billing the customer for almost 100 servers they own and operate. I have shuffled this info off to the appropriate person in my company for review.. I expect the customer will find in the next few months we will be decommissioning a lot of legacy servers on their behalf. (I actually don't care, I was just using it as a data set, but it made me lol)

Edit: Oh yeah the derp in all this, because we cant have a lana post with derp.. I found a good 50 servers we are billing for and operating that arent in the CMDB at all.. Once this information was known to my team lead (who is the one getting me to make these scripts) it became my job to fix that... So now I have a tone of work to do. Fortunately our server list has almost all of the info I need, so I could be able to bang this out in a week or so..

For a lot of years we've had BT provided Internet (via another source) and this week we got out of our contract. Our Internet cut off today and BT are due to actually cut the line soon, people are curious if that will mean we lose phone lines as well.

Our new Internet connection is due to be installed "soon". No one knows when and we have some important updates to do and exam results are due in 3 weeks which will need to be downloaded.

And of course with it being summer holidays there are no managers around to make decisions or chase up any issues.

Customers serverstorage is full and Exchange is not operational. They have a service level agreement and the consultant in question should have seen this coming. However he is on vacation and has not signed his chores over to somebody else nor has he installed any monitor software on said server.

Massive rage from customer. Wouldn't be surprised if they found somebody else ..

So my wireless router is acting up, dropping connections for both wireless and wired. Signal strength icon in taskbar reports "nothing wrong, still connected" even though I can't pull up http://192.168.1.1 at all. The problem is identical to this (with the same router model numbers), so taking suggestions for non-Linksys dual-band wireless-N routers.

Hello? Oh, hello! I'm sorry it's a very bad line. No, no no... but that's not possible, she was sealed in to the Seventh Obelisk after the prayer meeting. Well, no, I get that it's important... an Egyptian Goddess loose on the Orient Express. In Space. Give us a mo....

Yesterday was call HP day.. As im the first person in the team to call HP about an out of warranty server for this client, I get to write the doco on how to deal with the. So far the notes for the doco read like this.

    1. Call HP support number. Listen to the IVR. When it asks you to say the name of the product, don't bother as it wont understand you, just make a high pitched screeching noise and it will drop you in to the menu driven IVR which is faster anyway.

    2. When the support operator answers, if he doesn't sound indian, hang up and try again. The indian operators have no idea what they are doing and will blindly just do as you tell them, where as the American and Australian operators try to be helpful and fuck things up.

    3. Give them the serial number of a server, any server will do, they wont use it anyway.

    4. Describe the issue in sentences of 10 words or less.

    5. They will ask you if the server is still under warranty. You can either tell them the truth or push your luck and say yes. If you say yes you might get a phone call later on telling you it isnt, or you might not.

    6. They will ask for the serial number again. This one needs to be the right one unless you know the part number to order.

    7. Get them to email you the invoice or they will try and post it to the clients billing address.

    8. Be polite. The second you yell at the indian because repeating 'J for jump' for the 8th time they will just hang up on you. As you need this 'dont give a shit' indian, you need to just work with him.. Try other words in your letter rhyming game like 'I for incompetent' or 'B for bankrupt', words they will understand.
