It does seem like the show is trying to ignore the wolves. Also, is Rickon in the show? I haven't seen or heard about him.
Rickon had a scene in the pilot but what with the way shows take longer to film then the actual events that take place its best if they leave him out. He's going to get a a lot older than 3-4 in the next 5 years.

Just finished the 3rd book. If the grim reaper ever decides to retire, I daresay George R. R. could very well fill his post without any problems.
