entire quarth, dragons are never stolen, the fucking horse never dies, her khallasar is never killed, xian yo what ever his name is is gay, etc...
jon snow lets the wilding woman go and halfhand never actually tells him to kill her quite an important fucking plot change but ok
most of the arya harrenall part is changed also quite important change
Robbs messing around with that woman is also completely different, she is a minor house lady not a nurse on the battlefield and the relationship between them starts differently and sooner.

Just off the top of my head

    Here's what I can recall.

Talisa (the healer woman who Robb fancies):
      Spoiler:
in the books is known as Jeyne Westerling. The Westerlings are a minor Lannister house, so there's an element of forbidden love there, as well as the obvious fact that Robb is already promised to the Freys. Jeyne heals Robb after he himself is wounded in battle, and later "comforts" him when he hears of what happens in Winterfell. Some of this doesn't happen until early in the 3rd book, they've definitely brought this whole storyline forward a bit.

    The crowd riots:
      Spoiler:
are reasonably similar, although the royal procession was on horseback in the book and people were pulled off their horses etc.

    The Joffrey slapfest:
      Spoiler:
doesn't happen. However Cersei slaps Tyrion a bit for several of his smartass comments throughout the book.

    Ser Rodrik:
      Spoiler:
does die in the book, but not until Bolton's bastard arrives from the Dreadfort to take back Winterfell from Theon. It's not a beheading either, his death scene begins when his arm is cut off instead.

    Osha/Hodor/Bran/Rickon:
      Spoiler:
are mostly as they are in the book, but in the book there are two other children with them: Meera and Jojen Reed, who arrived earlier. They are the ones counselling Bran on his dreams instead of Osha and Luwin.

    Arya/Tywin/Littlefinger:
      Spoiler:
never meet in the book. Arya does serve as cupbearer for a while, but for Roose Bolton who takes over Harrenhal after Tywin moves on to continue fighting around the Riverlands. Arya knows Bolton is a Stark bannerman and considers revealing her identity to him, but decides not to trust him. So they're using Tywin instead of Roose in the show. As for Littlefinger, I don't recall him showing up there at all, but nothing wrong with a little added drama for drama's sake!

The three "names" Arya gives to Jaqen:
      Spoiler:
are different, at least the first two we've seen so far. In the books, Ser Amory Lorch is killed by Bolton's forces when they take over Harrenhal, while The Tickler survives into the 3rd book, where eventually he is also killed but under completely different circumstances. The first two names Arya gives in the book are two other lesser characters we don't see in the show (Chiswyck and Weese). The third name is supposed to be Jaqen himself, but in exchange for his own life, Jaqen agrees to help Arya escape Harrenhal instead.

    The disappearing dragons:
      Spoiler:
I don't remember them being stolen at all. As I recall, Dany simply makes the rounds in Qarth, looking for anyone who will help her acquire ships to sail back to Westeros. Once she realises neither Xaro nor the other merchants will help her, she decides to visit Pyat Pree in the House of the Undying. Nobody else thinks this is a good idea, but at this point she feels she doesn't have a choice. My guess for the show is that Pyat Pree himself has stolen the dragons and Dany must go to the House to rescue them.

    Earlier Dany stuff:
      Spoiler:
Her horse doesn't die, nor do any of her bloodriders. She loses one of her handmaidens to the conditions but that's it. Eventually they find an abandoned city where they shelter for a short while; she sends her bloodriders to scout around from there and eventually one of them returns with Xaro and two other merchants. From there they all continue on together to Qarth.

    Jaime:
      Spoiler:
is pretty much held hostage for the entire book. We see very little of him, all the interaction with him and Robb was made for the show. In fact the only scene I can remember is with him and Catelyn, which was brought forward to the end of the previous season: "I pushed him out the window", "there are no other men like me, only me" etc.

    Davos:
      Spoiler:
is right-handed with the knuckles on his left hand missing. But the actor who plays him (Liam Cunningham) is left-handed so it's his right hand that's missing the knuckles. Also Davos has several more sons, though a bunch of them meet a similar fate so the son we see in the show is probably a condensation for simplicity.

    Stannis's family:
      Spoiler:
is barely mentioned in the show, but they are there in the books. His wife is Selyse Florent, and his daughter is Shireen, who is afflicted with some disease I can't remember. So Melisandre simplifies things a bit in the show: yes he has no sons, but he does have a daughter. However the daughter is the one who is sickly, not the wife.

Also something else I expected we'd see more of by now but haven't yet:
      Spoiler:
more build-up for the Battle Of The Blackwater. Tyrion now knows of all the wildfire hidden in King's Landing, but we haven't seen anything about the chain yet?

      Spoiler:
That surprised me a little as Meera and Jojen appear to be quite important to Bran's storyline in the 3rd book, I also don't recall seeing the 2 Freys sent to be wards of the Starks who while being relatively minor in of themselves do make a bit of an impact later on.
      Spoiler:
Bolton using them as a threat at the Red Wedding.

    Jon Snow
      Spoiler:
In the book he actually lets Ygritte go as and rejoins Half Hand which has some very important effects on what happens in his storyline, I don't know what HBO plans on doing when it comes round to when Jon returns to Castle Black.

I, for one, am totally okay with them taking some license to make the show work better as a show rather than a book or to direct their budget where it's really needed.

It's really obvious that they are directing their budget to episode 9. The only change I'm not too happy with is that
      Spoiler:
The Brave Companions probably won' appear in this season (or maybe at all). I absolutely loved them in the books.

Several minor characters are missing from the show this season. Copypasta from Wikipedia:

      Spoiler:
Several characters from A Clash of Kings are not known to have been cast for season two. These include:

    • Ser Jacelyn Bywater; Bronn takes his place as new city watch commander in the adaptation
    • A pair of Crannogmen siblings, Meera and Jojen Reed
    • Two young Freys fostered at Winterfell, known as Big Walder and Little Walder
    • Roose Bolton's bastard son, Ramsay Snow
    • Strong Belwas, a eunuch warrior from Meeren sent by Illyrio to guard Daenerys
    • Davos Seaworth's other sons: Dale, Allard, Maric and Devan
    • Stannis's wife Selyse Florent, their daughter Shireen and their fool Patchface
    • The Tully family, including Catelyn's father Hoster and her brother Edmure
    • The mercenary leader Vargo Hoat and his sellsword company, the "Brave Companions"
    • Dunsen and Raff the Sweetling, two Lannister soldiers under Gregor Clegane's command

Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have said that they would delay the introductions of several key characters first appearing in A Clash of Kings until the third season. They did so because of the large number of characters already introduced in season two, and because they couldn't afford to have people "waiting around" for their characters to become central to the plot.

    From the third book spoiler
      Spoiler:
The way rodrick died I thought was done just like how Robb killed his own bannerman for slaying the Lannister hostages, took many ugly hacks to get through the neck. Just how I pictured it at least.

The changes are good for keeping the show a bit more upbeat. As it is we sometimes don't see certain character plotlines.

      Spoiler:
Am dissapointed the chain hasn't been started yet, I sure hope the blackwater battle isn't changed too much. That was so epic of a chapter.

      Spoiler:
Didn't Rob pull that off in one clean hit? It was Theon who executed some at Winterfell using an axe who took 3 hits to do it. I think it was the Master of the Horse or something as I remember it mentioning conversations about hunting making it hard for Theon to do.

    That's a bit disappointing.

    Old.

I liked the part where Arya goes "Kill X" and that assassin bloke says something along the lines of "You cannot pick a time.." and they she shouts and he rolls his eyes and then the next scene he falls over dead.

Kneecapping has been delivered to the idiots in this thread.
If you were a superhero you'd be The Incredible Fucktard with your ever-ready sidekick Douchetard Boy. Together, you fight intelligence and common sense where you go.
