    Evil Genius 2

This one comes out March 30th and looks like lot of fun, though I find the price tag with a bit below EUR 40 a bit high.

    Embargoed 1h pre-release game play (2 episodes):

I truly hate cartoonish graphics, but for games like this, they're a perfect fit.

Yeah pretty excited. EG1 was a lot of fun even though various parts of the late game were very poorly fleshed out. I've read and watched absolutely nothing about this one so for now i hold out hope this one will be better

I will say that lower then AAA price has me somewhat worried now though...

Yeah, the only downer is the price.

I replayed the first game a couple of years ago and it held up pretty well.

From what I have seen, this a more polished and less jank version of the first one

wish I had the spare money right now, one of the incredibly few games I would buy instantly, if only so that games like this get made more often. Same goes for upcoming Startopia remake.

I think that's what most people wanted anyway.

Rebellion have done some odd things with the ip over the years, so call me cautiously optimistic. Wouldn't be surprised if it ends up like Tropico is these days (good base game with crap dlc, rereleased as a new game with an expansion packs worth of new content/mechanics every few years)

Slightly more polished version of the first game.

Mostly has the same problems as the older one, but also has some nice quality of life changes.

Managing the world map is annoying. but not as annoying as EG1

After 10h with play, the game is quite repetitive.
On the world map, heat just keeps going up and I don't know why. Not running any Schemes.

There are other different criminal organizations running other continents. And when heat builds up they send agents to infiltrate your base.
Problem is, it is not uncommon to have to deal with 2-3 enemy teams in a row.

My base is a fucking war zone! I had 130+ minions, and down to 37 after all was defeated. Which included 3 robot armies..

My problem atm is the main objective, I got the final step left but I don't know what to do.
I would assume there is something to research, but I can't start it.

It's a lot like Hospital 2.0 but more hectic / violent.

    Finished the campaign.

    Reposting my Steam review below:

I have fairly mixed feelings about it. Overall, I'm happy I gave it a go but I can equally see people getting frustrated with it, as there are some questionable game design choices in here that ruin it in parts.

    Pros
You can create a massive sprawling lair and fill it full of interesting stuff. I really like the fact you keep your lair for the duration and multiple floors allows you to build things the way you want
Watching your minions go about their business is very cool and detailed.
The new henchmen are mostly good and I like that they don't permadie anymore.
I really like the visuals, art and sound design of the game. Really does a lot to give it that Bond / Austin Powers vibe
There is an absolutely insane amount of stuff to do between all of the missions to get more henchmen, loot and kill super agents.

    Cons
Arbitrary minon cap (300) means that you can't leverage the lair as much as you want to.
Some side missions will wreck your game. Lots of them involve sending waves of enemies at you until you do something on the world map. If you happen to do it at the same time as a super agent is in your base or the campaign is also sending waves of agents at you then you can easily get overwhelmed. The problem is that the game does a shit job of telling you when that is going to happen before you accept the mission.
Campaign is far too grindy. Waiting on research to complete or a scheme to run down time after time gets really boring after a while.
Switching back and forth between the map and multiple levels of your lair gets really awkward. I really think EG2 should have done away with the world map and kept all of the action in the base.
Basic agent waves are far too easy to kill. I miss the gameplay from the first game where various groups of them would explore for a while before stumbling on your base. Now they only come in one squad at a time and are trivial to beat with guard tables + cameras and traps.
Deception minons seem really worthless. I had a casino operation with 50 minions of various levels and agents would still almost always skip them and find the door to my base.
Super agents are weird. In EG they were unkillable, but had a clear stat weakness and got dumped outside your base when you brought down their HP or other stats, which meant you had to manage one that was on your island. Now they just despawn when they die. I would like to have seen more counterplay, like using deception minions to keep them in the casino or knock down their resolve. Since they find the base right away in almost all circumstances and ignore traps the best way to deal with them is to throw henchmen and minions at them until they die, which sucks. I initially struggled with super agents until I realised that they almost never come to your island if you don't start a scheme when they are watching on the map. This made it really easy to cheese the game and ensure you don't deal with multiple agents at once.
The way you make money in this game is awful. It honestly should have been replaced with a more streamlined or automated method in your lair that you would have to defend.
Minions don't get visibly improved stats as they get trained. This is especially notable for muscle minions, where a hitman or martial artist has the same HP as a worker.

Some tips for people that still want to play:

Rush the minion cap as fast as possible by building rooms full of lockers.
About a third of the cap (100) should be muscle minions, ideally with guns. This will give you some breathing room until you can get some henchmen, which are the best things you can have to defend your base. Once you have a couple, then the henchmen research and the guard vitality research becomes really effective.
Have a camera system setup watching the front door of your base and have 4-5 guard tables linked to a camera watching the front door at all times. This will deal with most threats. You can build traps too, but they are more fun than actually effective.
Heat on the world map absolutely doesn't matter unless you are doing a mission scheme that is going to hit the cap and cause it to fail. I would just keep doing money schemes, deliberately hit the cap and force it into lockdown. After it resets, rinse repeat.
Build multiples of the research equipment (whiteboards, databanks etc) to speed things up. If you don't, then progress through the campaign will be really really slow.
Same with training rooms. I would build 4-6 of each equipment to ensure you can quickly replace losses. This is especially important for muscle minions

Yeah, sounds about right. This will be another one of those games that I enjoy watching, but know that playing it won't be fun for me. On his recent stream, quill18 did what I would describe as a "streaming-sensitve rage quit". He at one point got so salty about the UI/UX (basically what you wrote), that he ended that gameplay session with a comment like "won't play that in the near future unless some QoL patches come out for it".

While watching, I had the impression that the UI was designed with a smartphones/tablets release in mind. More so than consoles, the way the UI works made me think of that.

The only part of this that's REALLY annoying ought to be a fairly easily patchable fix, which is the world map scheme gameplay requiring so much repetitive clicking and not being at all automatable.

    Let's hope the devs listen.
