For a good understanding of what a tripel (and more importantly, a quadrupel is) google! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tripel

Westvleteren Abt (the 12). It's been too long since I've had one. You have to reserve a crate at the abbey by phone, show up on time, hope they get to loading yours before they quit again and just.. pray. Maybe that's the point, come to think of it. They make exactly enough beer to fulfill their budget needs every year. And there's a rumour they make a 'special' they only hand out to guests. Must go there one time.

I have found that St Bernardus 12 is a decent (just that, decent) replacement for Westvleteren Abt. It's a lot easier to get your hands on. Beer.. lovely beer. So many stories to tell, so much to taste.

    Aw, Jason! <3 :-)

Perhaps I will convince Overspark to take me to http://www.biercafe.nl/ tonight, so I can score a St Bernardus 12. If I do, I'll raise my glass to you and the other beer lovers in the world!

PS On that website, hit the link 'bierkaart'. You'll then see the beers on tap ("wisseltap") and bottled. I love me a good cafe!

On the subject of Westvleteren, if you can't be bothered to spam their phone line to reserve a crate, they've got a cafe on-site which is quite nice and serves all three of their beers (I didn't see any "special" when I was there; I recall hearing somewhere the monks drink the witbier when they need something low-alcohol). St Bernadus is also quite close by, and they've got a shop (though I haven't been in, as it was a Sunday when I was there). There's also a great beer store / barn close to both that has loads of Belgian beer for dirt cheap.

Also, this looks awesome. Blind Pig is second only to Pliny from what I can recall. Score one Christmas present for the US relatives!

Thought you could only get a six pack at the cafe on site, instead of the entire crate? But tbh, it's not that closeby that I would just drive there for the 6.. might as well go in for the crate. Will do that one day, I keep promising myself :-)

And you're right, that looks awesome

I got the impression that their supply of takeaway beer at the gift shop is extremely limited. There was absolutely none available for sale when I was there (with the exception of their gift packs, which comprise one bottle of the 12 and two midget glasses for 20-ish euro).

If you're thinking about driving there, it really wasn't that hard to reserve a couple of crates. I spent about twenty minutes calling them repeatedly before getting through. The only downside is the very short list of dates you can pick your crate up on: I called on a Monday I think, and had a choice of something like that Wednesday, Thursday, or Saturday to pick up.

Had a bit of a Trappist tasting with some friends on Friday: (crap pic due to crap mobile camera)

    Achel Blonde
    La Trappe Tripel
    Westmalle Dubbel
    Westmalle Tripel
    Chimay Tripel

The Achel was great: quite sweet, but with a sort of sour taste as well, kind of like a geuze. Many layers of flavor, and pretty unique, which is nice.

I can't remember much about La Trappe, other than it was decent, and reminded me of what tripels are "supposed" to taste like. It was pretty smooth and easy to drink, unlike the Westmalle Tripel, which had some nice flavor with a bit of hoppiness, but really tasted like the 9.5% beer it is (it's supposed to be a great beer, mind you; I think it's just a bit stronger than I'm used to).

The Dubbel had some interesting smoky-type flavor, but was a pretty thin beer and had an odd aftertaste. I liked it a bit better than the Tripel, but nobody else did.

The Chimay was absolutely boring; not a bad beer, but nothing interesting at all about it.

Hm, like your review I haven't had a La Trappe, Chimay or Westmalle in years. Tend to stick with what I like. I do like those though. The La Trappe has always struck me as tasting somewhat.. medicinal. I plan to have some interesting ones in a few weeks, will try to remember to take pics and write up review

Unibrow beer seems like a top name.

Went to the Wychwood Brewery yesterday. Always good for a tour, and we scored some of their holiday stuff:

It's quite good: sweet and warm, with a kick of cinnamon added. A nice winter beer.

I was immensely disappointed that they don't do Brakspear goblets anymore, as I really wanted one.
