To be accurate, he has said many crazy things about women and their place in society, for a long long time and repeatedly. There comes a time when you have to conclude: "He doesn't say these things to connect with some extreme 'A woman's place is in the kitchen crowd', no, he actually believes all this himself; he is part of that crowd. And if you look at all the other things he says, or has said, it becomes quite obvious really. Santorum is one of those Republicans who'd love to take the US back to the 50ies, that is, their idealised version of the 50ies. The rest of us remember the horrors of the McCarthy times, the segregation, the paranoia, and so much else,or have at least read about them. But to these Republicans it is a sort of golden age. I think all the Republican candidates suffer from this affliction to some extend, but really, Santorum is the most extreme example of it. Which is why he lost so much of the popular, minority, and women's vote. He says what he thinks and believes in, and what he thinks and believes in is utter rubbish.
