At other times he has clearly and unequivocally distanced himself from the extremists (like Bachman) in his party.
McCain can be criticised on many things, but at the very least he makes an attempt to stand up to these morons.
Which is a shame really, because if more Republicans did that they'd actually have a shot at survival in the future.
I'm not sure where all this talk of the collapse of the Republican party is coming from. Sure they might chase away some of the more moderates and swing voters with this craziness, but the Republicans do have a massive following that agree with and support this nonsense. The Republican party is the refuge and party of choice of the anti-government types (Irony if I've ever seen it), the racists, the religious nutters, and the generally ignorant/crazy/miss-informed. Don't underestimate the power of small town America, or the Evangelical's who tend to vote Conservative.
It's not to say all Republican voters come under those categories, a lot are well educated decent people who believe in smaller government, less taxes and personal freedom and those are good things to believe in but the reality is that unless these fringe groups suddenly give up their racist/homophobic/religous extremist/dumber than shit/batshit crazy ideas then the Republican party has no fear of a drop in support.
Not to drag a whole mess into this but there's an interesting and massively bloated reddit thread that does a lot of soul searching regarding the motives of older republicans and generational types.

Normally political parties evolve over time, black becomes white, up becomes down, and so on. I don't quite think it's happening at all with republicanism - it's forming a smaller and smaller, more extreme coalition that is driving moderates away that has only survived thus far by shifting the overton window further and further into the herpy derpy dogmatic version of core values, voter ID laws and changing campaign financing. Time will tell if that is really sustainable.
My guess is that they will oh so predictably overreach, and they'll be thrown out of governance for a decade if given the chance of unrestricted governance.

You know what else good things to believe in? Santa Claus. And unicorns. To paraphrase, when I hear the words "smaller government", I reach for my gun. (Yes, I know where the original quote coming from).
"Smaller government" and "personal freedoms" are nothing more than a way of saying "fuck you, got mine", without risk of being accused a sociopath. The same "well-educated decent" people are only concerned about THEIR OWN personal freedoms, and THEIR OWN low taxes
"Personal freedom", "low taxes", and "small government" means they want to ride their noisy, smoke spewing ATV in the National Park, while drinking subsidized corn syrup, and having Medicare pay for their diabeetus.
Damn straight!
This all boils down to the language distortion bubble the Republicans have thrown up in US politics. They've been pushing the overton window so hard ,so far now that what used to be called anti-social behaviour is now the Republican party's platform. Who says you can't do FITD and DITF at the same time! Sure you can, just keep pumping out a massive amount of propaganda (the bigger the lie the better), buy up or out any opposition throughout the government and before you know it the morons will be going after the government they actually depend on with tar and feathers!
The reality is that the whole political system is poisoned with corruption, earmarks, favours-for-favours, and cronyism, with the Republicans just being to most blatant and outspoken in the practice. And those 'educated decent people' you're referring to. They couldn't care less. They've got theirs and fuck everyone else. They just want to be left alone. And the Republicans have written their platform in such a way that it explicitly tells these people that they will be safe, as long as the Republicans can keep their kickbacks.
And you know what: even that's a lie ...
Ann Romney on tax returns: "We've given all you people need to know"
http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/20...eturns.php?m=1
TLR Romney campaign : fuck you, I'm rich and you're not. Vote for me.
Ah yes republicans...
"You people, how dare you ask for more tax returns!"
Doesn't matter. This will not die down. And by refusing over and over again they'll just keep fuelling the speculation. This is not something they can ride out. Hell, even the republicans are telling them to come clean now. Calling him stupid for not having already done so. So actually none of the sides is letting this go! That's more political cooperation than we've seen in years! This is already costing him loads of political capital. So what he's hiding must be even more costly then.
And all that in a month when all those political pundits normally have nothing to wag their chins about.![]()
I read yesterday that if he'd known he'd have to release he wouldn't have run for President so how realistic is it that he drops out of the race either by his own decision or at the urging of the GOP leadership, and if that happened what would happen with regards to who becomes the Republican nominee?
I assume they'd nominate someone either based on the poll results even though many states weren't contested by those technically still candidates or nominate someone at their convention as opposed to just confirming a nominee.
Anyway, what're the chances and what'd happen?
The question is whether this will help determine people's vote. Obviously most of us here are reasonably well educated and probably progressive in our mindset but most American voters are not. They might just dismiss this all as "Washington Spin" or something suitably inane as that.
There was an article I read on huffingtonpost yesterday that referenced latest polling saying that Obama's approval/disapproval is in the negatives because of the economy (sorry I can't link directly I can't seem to find it now...). As long as the economy continues to struggle its going to remain a close contest which is stating the obvious I know but don't get too excited about Obama thrashing Romney just yet imo.
Romney is MANDATED to give 10% to the Church. This is one of the requirements for holding the title of a Church Elder.
The media really giving him a pass on the whole Mormon thing. Instead of asking about taxes, they should ask him instead: "As an LDIS Church Elder, how many Holocaust victims have you posthumously converted to Mormonism?" Let's see him try to win Florida after that question.
They "you people" comment is quite damaging. Not because it insults general public. Lord knows, Americans have lost all self-respect, they treat ultra-rich the way woman in abusive relationship treats her violent husband: "They exploits us because deep down they still love us..."
One of the contexts in which "you people" is perceived is "you people in the media". There is nothing that media hates more as being told to stay away from a juicy story. And it has nothing to do with the "liberal bias", it has to do that most journalists a lazy hacks. It is very easy for them to just keep speculating about taxes, because it fills airtime and fits into :narrative:, no matter what this narrative is. "Has Romney something to hide about his taxes? Let's ask the viewer, text 1 for "yes", text 2 for "no". Let's interview tax expert." Boom, 30 min TV segment.
And attack ads write themselves. Run a brief video of Obama complaining about partisan divide. Then list bunch of quotes from Republicans and Democrats asking for tax returns, then finish with "The only thing Democrats and Republicans can agree on is that Romney must release his tax records"...
