The ecb sacrificed test cricket for the world cup win. The trouble is losing the ashes in this fashion is undoing all the good publicity the world cup built here.

Why would they want to promote test cricket when they have a new format to sell to Sky for fat pensions ?

Denly gets himself in and is now throwing wild drives at wide balls. Are our players genuinely thick?

Not a bad day at the park tbh. I am going to dare to believe that Root and Stokes can bring this home tomorrow.

History says otherwise, but some genuine positives to take. Denly knuckled down once he stopped driving at balls, stokes and root seem determined to be there tomorrow to face the morning session and new ball, this will be a critical time. Although its not going to be as worn as a fifth day pitch 200 runs is a huge amount to still get.

It *can* be done, and arguably the best 2 English batsmen are in to do the job, see off the new ball and try to bat it out.

The opening session is going to be very important, as always. If we lose one or both of them to the new ball, it should be done by mid afternoon.

All on Stokes now...100 runs is still an awful lot to get.

Move over Botham there's a new man in town. What a game who said test cricket is boring.

    Breathtaking, Incredible. Unbelievable.

Not sure if we have enough superlatives in the English language for that.

    Can we clone him?

I am stil cross at Root for playing that shot.....
He needs to get his shit together or be 'dropped' for a 'captain'

It was a terrible shot in the context of the situation with 2 overs to the new ball. Root isn't a good captain tactically and is captain as he is the only batsman other than stokes who has a secure place and says nice things to the media.

Other than a once in a lifetime innings from Stokes England should have lost this game and the England selectors need to make changes.

I think Denly has done enough to show he can knuckle down, to grind out runs dropping the pretty play for low risk scoring but Roy needs to be changed, its like we are starting each innings one down. Buttler is handing by a thread in my view, he's out of form but when it does come together it can be match changing.

Woakes hasn't really been performing. I'm a massive fan of Curran so jump on any opportunity to get him into the team though.

Could definitely argue for buttler to be dropped, moved Roy down the order and bring in someone like sibley to open. The

Can we not get a 'specialist' captain in? Someone who can bat a little bit or do a half decent job of opening?
Every England captain I can think of has always taken a hit in their batting average once they make the jump to captain, so lets just skip a step and get someone who can make decisions in the field.

Stokes is an absolute boy. A*

Yeah, our top order is bang average atm anyway so why not a bang average batsman who can captain properly? :P

I'd make Buttler captain, I think he has a proper cricketing brain from the interviews I've heard.

I think Root can learn good captaincy, I don't think it is worth the detriment to the rest of his game though.
