On August 8, during testing aboard a barge in the White Sea near Nyonoksa, Russia, the nuclear engine of an experimental nuclear-armed cruise missile exploded, killing two technicians and injuring six others. On August 11, officials of the Russian nuclear agency Rosatom acknowledged that five employees had died in the explosion of what they described as "an isotopic power source for a liquid engine installation." The head of the nuclear research center, Valentin Kostyukov, called the five "national heroes."

Mini-shut-the-fuck-nobyl. It was effectively a dirty bomb with rocket fuel for explosive - if the reactor took active part in the explosion the whole ship would be glowing.

    Cheap sensasionalist cunts.

That said, welp. It never seemed like a particularly smart idea and i hope it gets put to sleep now.
Status-6 otoh is an amazing deterrance tool.

So comrade RazoR, why is eternal leader Putin taking escalation steps that were considered to insane by both sides at the height of the Cold War?
And why are Russian people sitting by while a kleptocrat is pushing world again to edge of nuclear disaster only to protect his and his buddies Swiss bank accounts?

I'm sorry, what? Eastern europe is chock full with US bases bases and middle east has been set on fire with CIA fingerprints all over it until russia and iran grew enough balls to put up resistance. Russia has been escalating fuck all until 2008 when american foreign politics finally knocked on our door.

that were considered to insane by both sides at the height of the Cold War?
Were ICBMs considered insane? Because Status-6 is basically that.

And why are Russian people sitting by while a kleptocrat is pushing world again to edge of nuclear disaster only to protect his and his buddies Swiss bank accounts?
idk why are american people sitting around while 1% lines it's pockets and dumps the debt on taxpayers?
There is a great example of a failed state right next to us where people took the freedumb bait while this sanction recession is still nothing compared to 90s. We had much better TV and music back then though.

Also, isn't there a thread for this? :thonk:

Status-6 is not an ICBM and cannot be compared to one. Its purpose is to be a doomsday device aimed at an opponent that will strike months after Russian has been reduced to ash. Unlike an ICBM it provides no warning. It is more comparable to gigaton level ship-born doomsday device concepts from '50es than to anything that has an actual precedent.

Why shouldn't East European nations seek defense within NATO? Especially after 50 years of Soviet occupation. And being a part of military alliance usually includes some military bases.
Russian arrogance beats USAian when it comes to deciding what sovereign nations neighboring Russian can and cannot do.

Also, 1% is a lie. 1% are regular but successful people. Its the top 0.1% that are a different species.

    ooh, it's quite the gem

it's a 100 megaton "FUCK YOU" torpedo, the sort of thing that sits in a harbour somewhere in fuck-off nowhere russia on the bottom, and if it doesn't get the weekly ping from Moscow because it's been levelled by nuclear weapons, it starts making it's way to it's assigned NATO port to deliver it's payload.

it's a continuation of the think that led to the "Dead hand" system and intended to ensure that a retaliation WILL arrive, even if the opposition gets all the boomers.

And we all know how well russians take care of infrastructure and hardware. No way for it to go off because someone drunkenly forgot to punch card in.

100 megatons detonated below sea level? How is that a doomsday weapon? It will kill a lot of fish and the city it goes to but it's not exactly the end of the world?

that's why it's a 100 megaton FUCK YOU Helgur, not just a 100 megaton knock over the head.

Some estimates for Poseidon put it at over 200 megatons. And its cobalt salted bomb. You don't get more Strangelovian than that.

At that yield low sea level is effectively a ground burst. Even without any salting depending on prevailing winds you're looking at a lot of fallout heading in land.

    My bold... what?

Why would you put an RTG in a missile?

Because they haven't had a new idea (or the ability to build it) since the 50s/60s.

The level of radioactivity following Thursday's explosion at a nuclear missile test base in the Russian North Sea exceeded the normal level 16 times without posing a health hazard, the Russian Meteorological Agency announced, AFP reports. However, authorities recommend residents of Nyonoska leave the area until Wednesday because of work being carried out at the nearby military base where the rocket exploded last week, reports Reuters.
