    TMA: Dutchistan

Soooo I知 going to be in Holland for about a week near the end of the month. Looks like the 23rd to the 28th or so? Maybe a bit longer? Not entirely sure because girlfriend booked the flights.

Basically I知 tagging along on a business trip, will be my first time in the country, etc etc etc. I値l be staying in Amsterdam for at least part of the trip; might be staying in Utrecht for part of it as well.

I know King痴 Day is the 27th and that looks like fun, but beyond that I知 unsure how to spend my time. Not impressed by the whole 斗egal weed thing because I live in a state where it痴 legal.

I just want to do chill, non-touristy things. Might rent a car, might not.

Sad thing is that this trip was a bit unexpected, but might end up interfering with my ability to come to the Hamburg meetup in July... :-(

Bruges, Ghent and better food/beer than they have in Holland. If you can pry the girlfriend away from work for two days a romantic weekend in Bruges will win brownie points for sure.

You mentioned not doing touristy things, what are you actually into? Neither country is known for its nature or hiking. Non-facetiously, Holland has great art museums and that really isn't a bad way to spend a week or so. Shortlist would include the Van Gogh Museum, Rijskmuseum, Mauritshuis, Escher Museum, and the Rembrant House.

Depends what you are into? Tell me some more about that and i can help.

Bruges is a lovely romantic Belgium town indeed. I would personally pick Utrecht over Amsterdam any day for just food, drinks and atmosphere. Amsterdam is a over priced tourist trap that only has good museums going for it.

Yeah I agree with Sacul. There are a few good craft beer bars like Beer Temple, Foeders, Proeflokaal Arendsnest, Bierproeflokaal in de Wildeman and Beer Loves Food but the dining in the city is bad compared to other Dutch cities.

If in Amsterdam some good museums to visit not mentioned already are Anne Frank huis (requires reservation), Hermitage, Amsterdam Museum, Scheepvaart museum and Begijnhof.

Utrecht is nice, ignore all the nonsense about Belgium. People who tell you that Amsterdam is a tourist trap and then want to send you to Bruges are not to be trusted.

Because when you visit a tiny country the only logical thing to do is go view an even tinyer country.

The Heineken experience is a wonderful dive into capitalist realism.

The parks in Amsterdam are cool.

The massive museum is sweet if it isn't too busy.

    Bruges,
"I think we could all do with sitting back a bit and detaching ourselves from the situation to really think about how these issues reflect on our future and how we discuss them here and be a bit less aggressive or defensive because everyone has a complicated set of circumstances that has led the to place importance on particular issues and it doesn't meany any of them is less valid, we just need to look at the broader picture"

Sounds like some good suggestions in here. Sex museum sounds sorta boring tho. Trains are far more interesting lolautist. What’s the deal with this Heinikin museum though, keckers?

Still might hop a train to Belgium or some such; we’ll see.

The aquarium in Rotterdam is also quite nice.

Really there's plenty to do without ever having to set foot in the breakaway provinces
