His Taxes is probably 98% legal.
But the illegal bits are fraud and embezzlement. Cheating banks and investors.
    Those are quite serious crimes

One think is for a rich person to steal from the poor.
But when the rich & privileged starts stealing from the rich & privileged it gets serious.

e: Sure, Biden can hammer him on being a piece of shit, but to conservatives gaming the system " just makes him smart". The only thing that could reliably kill his chances would be a slam dunk violation of state laws that carries a prison sentence or would drive him into bankruptcy. And i just cant see that happening.
Is it not mainly an image thing? Sure, if he gets hammered for actual fraud that'd be another problem, but Trump has mainly survived over the years thanks to his carefully cultivated image as a bigly successful billionaire businessman, when the reality is rather different.

That's why he was fighting the tax return release, because they give lie to his claims and without them he's got nothing.

/e And yeah, he's done a lot of suing in the past to hide info like this. However this time his potential law suit targets include people with larger legal warchests than he has, so... ruh roh.

Trump declared a staggering $1.4bn in losses from his core businesses for 2008 and 2009. He appears to have personally guaranteed loans totalling $421m, most now due within four years. The Times reported: “Should he win re-election, his lenders could be placed in the unprecedented position of weighing whether to foreclose on a sitting president.”
    Wow.

Also, the question of illegality is a bit of a red herring. Illegality in a world where Trump and his businesses have been investigated in (checks notes) over 3,500 legal cases, is actually less important than the potential erosion of his image/brand.

NYT release shifts the burden of proof, allowing Biden to potentially hammer Trump by simply asking him to prove (release his taxes) his claims.

In Marxist context it is. It's surplus value that is generated by the labor but withheld from them.

Up to $60 billion in unpaid wages each year makes employers the biggest criminals in America.

And not paying wages vs taking the wages owed are legislated differently. If I hire person A and don't pay, then I'm breaching a contract but have not committed a crime (necessarily). If A then takes money from me to the amount of wages due, it's theft, a criminal offense and a police matter. This is one of the bases for the argument that police aren't there to protect the people, but private property instead.

re: Trump: I've been under the impression that whatever you do, you do not fuck with the IRS. I'm pondering if the question whether he was entitled to those refunds is sufficiently important to bring the IRS on him all proper, or does his position as the president and the nominee of the Republican party protect him from that too.

You all really underestimate the number of legal loophole and refund methods that are available to the rich and not the average person.

Trump's taxes are hardly exceptional in the world of the oligarchs. A despicable state of affairs but hardly surprising or out of the ordinary.

Remember the panama papers, paradise papers, etc?

The whole system is set up this way, corruption is legal and open now. Rotten all the way down.

It always has been. This is just the most modern form of it.

However, we now have the technology and production capacity which means a different future is possible. That's why there's so much turmoil, they know the threat which faces them.

it doesn't matter, Biden is not going to be able to erode his brand meaningfully on this basis without throwing his own donors under the bus, and that's not going to happen.

much like Trump's creditors aren't going to see a dime, because it turns out foreclosing on a defacto dictator is a terrible idea for your long term health.

Does anyone else think the NYT reporting on this is actually a magnificent and entirely deliberate bait into tricking Trump into revealing his own criminal tax fraud?

They go on and on and on about how he is losing money as evidenced by his tax returns. The other explanation? He is fiddling the books by overclaiming deductions and so on. He is now in a dilemma - admit his businesses are failing or admit he has fiddled the books. And NYT dont seem to point this out, leaving him room to hang himself if his ego cant handle the 'failed businessmen' label

I mean this is the news agency that helped trick the American people into supporting an illegal war on false pretenses that destroyed an entire region of the world, so they definitely can trick a riverboat casino captain into incriminating himself
