The working class white kid problem is more geographic than anything else. It was brought up in a public lecture I went to I think at LSE but I can't remember who by. Basically it's another story based on the managed decline of English towns and large inequalities in urban investment.

That's not a very catchy narrative for the media to run with though, better to blame those chavs for wanting to be poor and stuck in collapsing housing estates.

Unfortunately the trend holds up in inner London just as well:

Interesting. I think it must ultimately come down to class becoming more entrenched over time, being from a migrant family shows an element of inter generational aspiration due to the process of migration. They also receive very different cultural messaging and opportunities through close knit migrant communities whereas working class white communities have been degraded over time.

I think the salient point is inter-generational aspiration. Asian migrants tend to have concrete evidence of the value of education, either learned or appreciated because of the lack of provision in origin countries.

The NHS is very good but it isn't special. The WHO ranks the NHS at about number 18 in the world for national healthcare systems effectiveness

That's not a like for like study/comparison. ISTR a 2017 study which everyone baulked at. With regards to ease of access and whatnot the NHS is by far #1. I don't think we've ever been near the top 3 when it comes to outcomes for a long time, if ever. Moaning about the tories aside I'm pretty sure that real terms funding has increased most, if not all years since 2010. I'm not denying that 'healthcare' is more expensive now in terms of treatments and having an aging population... But any large organisation is going to develop a level of 'bloat' which outweighs economies of scale. I've no real issue with certain capabilities being augmented by small/medium firms in some circumstances.

An ageing population also has greater healthcare needs which need to be provided by a younger population which is smaller demographically and represents a smaller tax base due to decades of effective wage stagnation and wealth hoarding by the old fatties who hog hospital beds.
