lol people have been getting monoxide poisoning because they're so desperate to warm themselves up. No power, water, or heating for days when the temps are below freezing. You better believe the government has failed

Have they sent out $2k cheques yet?
Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves for slaughter.

i make that argument based on the idiocy on display on January the 6th.

and i called it idiocy because having the deck stacked that high in your favour, and not carrying it off after all qualifies the people doing it as fucking idiots.

Tbh if you are a 1st world country and millions of people in your country end up having to go 60+ hours without power/water/heat then yes your nation has failed.

(Unless the nuclear apocalypse has started in which case yeah fair enough)

pretty sure that a post-nuclear wasteland qualifies as a failed nation too, failed by external factors yes, but certainly failed.

funny that you bring that up, only something like 55% of the eglible voters actually voted, and the most desperate in this situation (ie, the poor) account for the majority of the people not voting.
so really, the people suffering the most didn't get what they voted for, because voter suppression means they didn't vote at all.

Yes this is a feature of American "democracy" now

If you voted incorrectly, you can't complain. If you didn't vote, you also can't complain. Or if you voted for the right guy - "stop complaining he's working on it"/ "it's not his fault".

Any real participation in politics has been thoroughly marginalized, so the only thing left is to give your vote and that becomes the sole basis for everything that happens to you.

In inverted totalitarianism, grievances can be easily deflected by voting status and appeals to Just Vote. Failures by the powerful have been obfuscated because ultimately, you voted, or didn't vote, therefore it's really your fault.

    That's a bold strategy, Cotton.

“It comes from a very ancient democracy, you see..."

"You mean, it comes from a world of lizards?"

"No," said Ford, who by this time was a little more rational and coherent than he had been, having finally had the coffee forced down him, "nothing so simple. Nothing anything like so straightforward. On its world, the people are people. The leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."

"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."

"I did," said Ford. "It is."

"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't people get rid of the lizards?"

"It honestly doesn't occur to them," said Ford. "They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates to the government they want."

"You mean they actually vote for the lizards?"

"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."

"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"

"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard," said Ford, "the wrong lizard might get in. Got any gin?"

    "What?"

"I said," said Ford, with an increasing air of urgency creeping into his voice, "have you got any gin?"

"I'll look. Tell me about the lizards."

    Ford shrugged again.

"Some people say that the lizards are the best thing that ever happened to them," he said. "They're completely wrong of course, completely and utterly wrong, but someone's got to say it."

    "But that's terrible," said Arthur.

"Listen, bud," said Ford, "if I had one Altairian dollar for every time I heard one bit of the Universe look at another bit of the Universe and say 'That's terrible' I wouldn't be sitting here like a lemon looking for a gin.”
