Success, only minor issues
Every part will be cold, wet, expensive, late, embarrassing
International security incident
Something else
one direction were far and away the thing the athletes enjoyed most, and the closing ceremony is supposed to be a first-of-many party for the athletes as much as anything else.
elsewise, 3 hours of absolute fucking pony. all that was needed to redeem everything was an en masse cover of Heroes at the end. couldn't even manage that.
Poms in being bitter non-shocker. You guys just put on the best Olympics of my lifetime, you should be proud yet all you do is whinge!!!
Britain's done a really good job from what I've seen, pretty good ceremonies on the whole, congrats peeps.
Parts of the ceremonies have sounded like a Clear Skies soundtrack, btw... I like.
Beijing had no atmosphere (really all it had was an amazing Opening Ceremony)
Athens was decidedly average
Sydney was very very good... very similar to London
Atlanta was terrible. Overly commericalised for the time (although compared to today's world it'd probably fit right in). Under resourced etc
Barcelona... nfi I was 8. Great opening ceremony if only for the arrow to light the flame. Oh and the Dream Team.
When I say my lifetime I basically mean what I remember from the last 4 Summer Games. The concensus seems to be that these Olympics are Sydney with extra historical resonance/meaning because its in London and significant events have taken advantage of the landmarks that are avaliable.
Edit: and if people want to criticise London's music selection at least it didn't have Tina Arena and Nikki Webster as its star attractions...
We were all but promised a historic clusterfuck drizzled in lashings of fail with a side of total security failure. What do we get? Apparently a reasonably competent and entertaining (for totally the wrong reasons) olympics. Well, fuck.
They snatched from us our golden opportunity for snide take downs, black humour in crisis and fatalistic despair at the decay of our homeland.
That alone is worth a bit of whinging.
So the party is over, a whole series of sports from 'Rich Chicks on Horses' to 'Kids on Bicycles' have been shown and to cap it off a bunch of ballerina's dressed as orange birds danced around supported by The Who (only caught last 10 minutes of the closing ceremony). I guess all that is left to do is find out which country won the Olympics and lock the thread until 2016.
So Blur, The Specials and New Order were reputedly in London last night performing a gig, and the "Best of British" the managed to round up was the spice girls (shit) George Michael (can't sing anymore...) and Jessie fucking J.... and worst of all the let the Kaiser Chiefs butcher a Who song![]()
18(.33) of 29 golds achieved while sitting down, op success
Also, russell brand singing
no fucking need
Still, only two weeks until the Paralympics. I hear they have planned something as terrible for that as well. Bring on the brutal wheelchair sports!
Overall a very good Olympics IMO. Being an old bastard I can remember a fair few of them and only Sydney comes close (it had a better closing ceremony though). Spoke to a few m8s that live in London who attended a lot of events and they loved it, no hassles getting around the place and getting into venues was quick and easy.
We were talking about it on Saturday night and the concencus was this will be the best Olympics any of us will see in our lifetimes. The 24/7 TV coverage certainly helped as it gave an insight into a ton of sports that no one would ever think about watching. London did a great job of showing itself to the world , will guarantee a bumper tourist season next year.
Roll on 2014 for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , looking forward to the dooking for chips and 50l lager challenge events as I think we stand a chance![]()
I have been very proud of being British and especially a Londoner these last few weeks.
And the BBC coverage was absolutely amazing. Through digital TV + Website streaming absolutely everything simultaneously.
Go back 10 years and claim that would even be feasible, yet along be pulled off almost faultlessly and you'd get a visit from the men in white coats.
