It's like people aren't thinking that athletes have maybe ~15 years at the top in them, so you'll get a run of golds but then someone younger & better comes along. Unless yours have been on world best performance this year and really are under-performing just a few months later.
A part of me likes to think that Federer let Murray win.

im probably being very dumb, but wrt boxing, why does making the semis guarantee you of a medal?
Some sports don't have a 3rd place game, so they give both semi-final losers a bronze.
if memory serves it's a safety thing. if a boxer is knocked out they're prevented from boxing for a time after, and since the bronze match is inevitably being fought by two losers, there's a potential situation where the bronze would be awarded by default without a punch ever being thrown, so instead they award two bronzes.
