It's like people aren't thinking that athletes have maybe ~15 years at the top in them, so you'll get a run of golds but then someone younger & better comes along. Unless yours have been on world best performance this year and really are under-performing just a few months later.

A part of me likes to think that Federer let Murray win.

Federer had been playing earlier that day, Murray had not, Federer was tired but he didn't let him win. But if Federer had to pick one person to be beaten to gold by in that tournament I think it would have been Murray.

If he let him win it was to avoid the ten minutes of guaranteed crying at the end.

When he fell to his knees at the end I genuinely thought Murray was going to cry again, this time after winning. Jesus man pull yourself together!

Britain's boxers could well end up being London's equivalent of Beijing's cycling team if they keep this form up. Absolutely demolishing everyone.

im probably being very dumb, but wrt boxing, why does making the semis guarantee you of a medal?

Some sports don't have a 3rd place game, so they give both semi-final losers a bronze.

if memory serves it's a safety thing. if a boxer is knocked out they're prevented from boxing for a time after, and since the bronze match is inevitably being fought by two losers, there's a potential situation where the bronze would be awarded by default without a punch ever being thrown, so instead they award two bronzes.

wrestling and a couple of the other combat sports do it for a variety of reasons.

indeed. I was worried at one point he'd get disqualified for "not trying" when he stopped and appeared to want to moonwalk backwards over the line....

Can anyone find a video of the 400m mens Heat 2 semi finals? The one where Oscar Pistorius finished last?
