Pretty much, it might help in some situations where the lazy nut jobs can't be arsed to find a dodgy gun, but otherwise if someone wants one to massacre 20 people or hold up a bank they will get one no matter what laws you have in place.

Even if somehow the US constitution was amended to remove the right to bear arms, there is absolutely no way that every gun could be collected and destroyed, so its pointless. You guys already have too many and the border with mexico.

It works marginally in the UK because we are an Island and didn't have many to start with but it would impossible in the US.

The amount of Breiviks in the world is a lot smaller than the population of people that are on the verge of being unhinged, then have one bad day and hey: I got rejected by America got talent and I have a gun right here!

The amount of preparation that it takes to commit an act like this with gun laws in place means that all but the truly psychotic are dissuaded from following up on their drive of "I'm going to shoot some people because I'm so fucking godamn angry right now".

Gun laws aren't in place to prevent any gun crime from ever occurring, it's there because people are volatile, emotional, irrational and often stupid beings. A fight at the pub over who was first in line to be served can cause tempers to flare, but with a gun in your belt the chances of it escalating wildly beyond that are clearly a lot higher.

To be frank, I've never understood why gun control is a controversial debate. It's really quite straight forward once you read up on the facts. It's not one of the great inconsolable debates of our time, it's rather easy to understand and I have yet to hear any good argument as to why the average person should be allowed to bear arms.
